Some Spin-Offs Give More Time to Reflect on Character Relationships
“School Briefs” Offers a Look Into the Slice of Life Moments Between the Battles
While not exclusively written by Horikoshi, he did supervise the story and provide illustrations for the School Briefs series of light novels. As the name suggests, this series follows the students of UA in their school life. If you are someone who loved the slice-of-life moments in classic MHA episodes like Season 3’s “Moving into Dorms”, then this series will be a great read for you.
Some of the highlights of these light novels include:
- Bakugo and Eri. Aizawa encourages Bakugo to make friends with Eri, which offers a look at the softer side of an often prickly character.
- UA School Festival. In an extension of the school festival from the main story, we get to see how 1-A students individually choose to celebrate the festivities.
- 1-A and 1-B Slumber Party. The girls of UA have a slumber party during training camp. While MHA arguably offers one of the stronger female casts in Shōnen, it is nice that they have more time to shine in a story dedicated almost solely to them.
- The Teachers Hang Out. While the adults in MHA play a pivotal role, we often see even less of their personal lives than the students. Volume 3 of “School Briefs” offers a look at the staff of U-A on a night out after school.
- And much more!
MHA moves at such a fast pace, so there are often times where it didn’t pause to breathe as much as it could or should have. If you are watching MHA for the first time, then you may be spoiled on some main story events if you read through all the “School Briefs” before watching. However, if you are doing a reread/watch of MHA, it could be fun to pick up these light novels and read them alongside the timeline of the main story.
“You’ll get to read about the characters going about their everyday lives – something I haven’t been able to squeeze much of into the manga, as I’ve been too focused on moving the plot forward. I really want to add more content like this into the manga itself” – note from Kohei Horiksohi, MHA author, in “School Briefs” Volume 1.

My Hero Academia: The Significance of “Plus Ultra” Beyond Words
“Plus Ultra” in My Hero Academia goes beyond words, symbolizing hope, resilience, and the unwavering spirit of heroes.
See Inventive Team-Ups Between Your Favorite Students and Pros in “Team Up Missions”
Although the story offers many opportunities for our heroes to team up, there isn’t enough time to see all the combinations that fans want. Well, want no longer as “Team Up Missions” arranges our heroes in interesting combinations and sends them on missions that challenge their relationships and abilities.
From the very first volume, we get to see collaborations fans asked more of, as Deku, Ochaco and Bakugo team up with Miruko on a training mission. Other fun team ups from the series include:
- Deku, Fumikage, and Shihai Kuroiro from class 1-B. We don’t see Fumikage and Deku team up much after the sports festival, and Kuroiro’s powers to meld with black make this mission an interesting one.
- Bakugo, Shoto, Kirishima and Camie from Shiketsu High. While the UA trio of boys is always fun to see, Camie provides a fun dynamic in her interactions with Bakugo as well.
- The 1-A Girls. The Girls of 1-A have ample opportunities to team up in this manga spin-off series, even in casual situations like returning a lost dog.
- Prequel Story. One “team up” featured in these volumes shows Deku and Bakugo facing off with a villain in a story set before the main My Hero Academia timeline.
These are just a few of the highlights in the 7 volumes that “Team Up Missions” has published so far. Make sure to check out the amazing illustrations and fun stories that author and artist Yoco Akiyama provides for this entertaining MHA spin-off. While the battles aren’t as fearsome as the main manga, you won’t want to miss out on these epic team-up missions!
“This spin-off shows a bunch of interactions and team-ups between this one, that one and the other one – all things that you don’t get to see in the main series! It’s an awesome manga that doesn’t skimp on the details! – comment from Kohei Horikoshi, MHA author, on the release of “Team Up Missions”.

After the original series ended, another My Hero Academia story will soon be concluded.
Some Spin-Offs Offer a More Humorous Look at Our Favorite Characters
“Smash” Puts Our Heroes in a Humorous New Light
While the previously mentioned spin-off and side stories offer an at least canon-parallel take on these characters, “My Hero Academia Smash!!” is much more okay with taking the characters on wild deviations from the main story. This means that characters will often appear with different personalities and motivations than in the original stories, appearing as caricatures of their main manga selves. This doesn’t mean that hardcore fans will not enjoy this manga, however, as seeing exaggerated takes on key story moments offers a humorous reprieve from the sometimes heavy story beats in MHA.
“My Heroine Academia” Focuses on the Girls of 1-A
This is a more esoteric spin off of MHA, with chapters appearing in some volumes of the manga or alongside the main chapter releases in Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine. As the name suggests, it mostly focused on the heroines of MHA, while still offering a humorous tone like “Smash!!”.
Alongside the students of class 1-a, we also got scenes from:
- La Brava & Gentle Criminal
- Mei Hatsume
- Himiko Toga
- And even Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu from class 1-B!
There is no shortage of story for fans to enjoy in the main MHA manga. But for those who just can’t get enough of this legendary cast of characters, you’ll want to check up on these charming spin-offs. You won’t be disappointed!
My Hero Academia is now available to watch on Crunchyroll, Hulu, Netflix and Amazon Prime. You can read the original manga and spin-offs on VIZ.

My Hero Academia
In My Hero Academia, Young Deku is born into a world where people commonly have something called quirks, also known as superpowers. He himself is born without any, but circumstances lead to that changing. He enrolls at the UA High School, a prestigious academy where the worlds future heroes learn how to use their powers.
-
In My Hero Academia, some humans have superpowers called quirks. Izuku Midoriya, nicknamed Deku, is not one of them. Deku has always idolized heroes like the number one hero, All Might, and since he was a child, he has always wanted to be a hero. However, his lack of a quirk has always held him back, but a chance encounter with All Might after discovering a classmate in danger sets Deku on the path to becoming a true hero. My Hero Academia centers around Deku and a class of heroes-in-training at UA. This school shapes young quirk users into future heroes through fake rescue missions, combat training, and other hero-tempering tasks. With young Deku inheriting the “One-For-All” quirk, he will learn what it means to be a true hero while facing off with dastardly supervillains.
