How To Get The Dragonbane Sword In Skyrim

How To Get The Dragonbane Sword In Skyrim

Skyrim has an abundance of weapons to collect and find, but some can be easily missed, such as the Dragonbane, without even realising it till much later in a playthrough. The game continues to glue players to the land, and, as any good adventurer knows, being well-prepared is a must in any potential dragon-encountering situation—especially with a weapon that deals bonus damage to them.

The Hearthfire houses in Skyrim are great, and players will realize that after understanding every unique thing that each house has to offer.

The Dragonbane is one of the only Akaviri-style weapons you can find within the game, apart from the Akaviri Sword in the Dawnguard DLC. If you don’t have the DLC, the Dragonbane is the next best thing you can acquire if you enjoy the style and happen to be nostalgic about Oblivion.

Where To Get The Dragonbane Sword

The Dragonbane can be found in the Sky Haven Temple, home to The Blades faction within Skyrim. As you progress through the main story quests, you will naturally make your way here, meaning the location is essentially unmissable unless you are an avid fan of avoiding the main scenario and getting sidetracked.

An image with the map of Skyrim visible. Sky Haven Temple is hovered over which is east of Markarth and the player can view many other locations scattered around it. A river forks and splits off running on either side of the area of Sky Haven Temple.

The exact location is east of Markarth, so you can easily open your map and fast-travel back to Sky Haven Temple once you have been there once. The Dragonbane can be found on a wooden table on the left side of the temple in a small room, where it will be emitting a fairly obvious enchanted glow.

How To Unlock The Sky Haven Temple

The image showcases the player's opened quest journal and within it Alduin's Wall is hovered over. Objectives are clearly laid out on the screen with one mentioning Sky Haven Temple.

If you still have to complete Skyrim’s main story, then to unlock Sky Haven Temple you will need to complete the Alduin’s Wall quest. This is the only regular way you will be able to enter the temple in a normal playthrough.

Next to the table where the Dragonbane is laid, there is a chest for you to open. Inside will be a full set of ‘Blades’ armour for you to loot at your leisure.

Once inside, you don’t have to take any extra steps before you can take the Dragonbane for yourself. You can grab it immediately from the temple.

Dragonbane Base Stats And How To Upgrade

An image showing the Dragonbane hovered over in the player's inventory. It mentions having the base damage of 17, 10 weight, 789 value and then the bonus damage to dragons and other enemies.

The base stats of the Dragonbane for our character at level 57 when picked up are 17 damage, a weight of ten, and a value of 789. This is a great starting base for a sword. The enchantment is what sets this weapon apart from many others though, with it dealing 20 extra points of damage to dragons and then an additional ten extra hit points to other enemies.

The Dragonbane can not be disenchanted or re-enchanted, but it can be upgraded. You can upgrade the Dragonbane at any Grindstone, so the one near the entrance of Whiterun next to the Warmaidens’ is fast to get to. For upgrading, you will need the following:

Requirement

How To Get

Arcane Blacksmithing Perk

Available with a Smithing level of 60.

Steel Smithing Perk

The first Smithing perk you can acquire.

Quicksilver Ingots

The ore to make them with a Smelter can be bought from blacksmithing merchants.

Alternatively, you can mine with a pickaxe in Dawnstar’s ‘Quicksilver Mine’ for the ore instead.

When you have all the required materials, you can upgrade the Dragonbane naturally, as you would with any other weapon. For example, the first upgrade is an ‘Exquisite’ version of the Dragonbane, giving it 24 damage and a value of 874 instead of its base stats. Even more efficient for slaying the dragons in style.
