Baldur’s Gate 3 Set Up A Lot of Expectations For Other RPGs

Baldur’s Gate 3 brought a lot to the table to the RPG genre—it’s gonna take a lot for games like Avowed and Dragon Age: The Veilguard to surpass.

However, fans think they’ve found a new secret, this time staring at them right in the face throughout the whole game. Taking a closer look at the icons for the spells in Baldur’s Gate 3, one eagle-eyed fan thought they discovered some kind of secret code.

The Power Of Three

In a Reddit post on the Baldur’s Gate 3 subreddit, samuelazers posted a collage of spell icons from the game and noted that most of them had three dots around them. Perhaps this was some sort of secret code hidden by Larian? We wouldn’t put it past the developer, considering the number of hidden secrets we’ve found since launch.

“Maybe because three is the magic number,” said one comment. A quick Google search revealed that the number three holds an important place in numerology, symbolism, and mythology. Maybe the dots are just a nod to this number, considering how much magic there is in the game.

Another comment suggested that the three dots are more meta than that, saying they might “represent the lines of code that should theoretically do absolutely nothing… but if you get rid of them bad things happen.” Who could forget the coconut jpeg from Team Fortress 2? It seemed random, but deleting it would break the game.

However, most comments suggest that they’re nothing more than the artistic expression of the creator, intended to show imperfection. While it is a bit curious why the three dots are repeated so often, maybe the artist simply wanted to get us theorizing about nothing. The comment suggested that “they have a silly time giggling and kicking their feet about it.

Looking closely at the icons, it is a bit fishy that so many of them have these three dots. It could simply be the signature of the in-universe mage that classified these spells. God knows they need something to amuse themselves with in their towers.
