Metro Awakening is the latest entry into the highly acclaimed Metro series, based upon the novels of the same name by Dmitry Glukhovsky. Though technically the fourth entry into the video game series, Metro Awakening is the first to take place in VR and contains its own standalone story separate from the events following Artyom in the main games and books. Though the story of Metro Awakening is a linear experience, players will still get the chance to try out plenty of different weapons throughout.

Metro Awakening introduces lots of interactivity with its weapons, including the ability to manually eject magazines and check the chamber for loaded rounds – both of which not only feel awesome to do in VR, but have a very practical use as well. However, not every weapon is suitable for every situation, and so we’ll be ranking every weapon in Metro Awakening to see how they stack up.
7
Tokarev
A Fast And Accurate Pistol Ideal As A Sidearm
The Tokarev is a relatively basic pistol, and will certainly come in handy at various points of the game’s story. Along with being quite easy to aim in VR compared to some other weapons, the Tokarev packs a decent punch and can take down human enemies with a single headshot.
Ammo for the Tokarev is abundant, and the standard-issue glow sights certainly help with its accuracy. The only downsides to this pistol are its lack of ammo capacity and power against more heavily armored enemies or strong mutants.
6
Helsing
A Highly Functional And Stealthy Crossbow
The Helsing is a unique gas-powered crossbow that holds up to six bolts and fires them silently at a fairly decent range. The Helsing is remarkably accurate considering its rather hamfisted and improvised appearance.

2024 has been a great year for Xbox Game Pass, with plenty of great indie games and highly-anticipated AAA titles hitting the service on day one.
hile it is ideally suited for taking down human enemies, the Helsing will also be reasonably effective against smaller mutants like Nosalises. However, it is worth remembering that this weapon’s longer reload times may become a factor when facing off against several of the creatures at once.
5
Grenade
An Improvised Explosive With Devastating Effects
Sometimes the best way to deal with a problem in the next room is to simply blow it up. The makeshift hand grenades (or pipe bombs may be a more accurate description) will generate a decent-sized blast and will most certainly flush groups of enemies out from behind cover, or stun larger mutants if not kill them altogether.
The grenade pin must be pulled and the fuse will gradually shorten, which makes it one of the most fun weapons to use in VR. Having a reasonable supply of grenades will provide a degree of tactical versatility. Just make sure those VR wrist straps are fully secure before throwing one!
4
Kalash
A Common But Powerful Assault Rifle
The Kalash is one of the most common weapons found throughout Metro Awakening, but it’s also one of the better guns players will come across. With good damage, reasonable accuracy, and, most importantly, a decent magazine size, the Kalash makes for the ideal all-rounder for the majority of the game.

Where it falls short is in its stealth ability, which is virtually non-existent. However, the Kalash more than makes up for any deficits in this department with its solid fire rate. Overall, it is usually better to have one of these rifles than not, even if it’s just used as a backup option.
3
DShK
A High-Caliber Mounted Machine Gun
The DShK is a mounted heavy machine gun that players will be able to use at various stages of the game. Though it cannot be moved, it has by far the strongest combination of damage output and fire rate in the game; thus, it is ideally suited for taking down stronger mutants.
Although players will only get to use this weapon in limited circumstances, it is such great fun to use and noticeably different from using the other weapons in the game. Just make sure to fire in bursts. Otherwise, the DShK is prone to overheating, which can be very costly.
2
Blowgun
An Improvised And Ancient Stealth Weapon
The Blowgun is a new weapon introduced in Metro Awakening and is predominantly used by cultist enemies. Being both silent and accurate, as well as highly powerful, it is suited to the game’s stealth sections and will make a big difference when it comes to strategy.

Though ammunition may not be as readily available for the Blowgun, it’s easy to see where the advantage of this weapon lies. The small circular sight makes a big difference in VR, enabling players to hit targets much more easily. However, they probably won’t want to pull this out in the middle of an intense gunfight.
1
Shambler
A Highly-Powerful And Effective Revolver-Shotgun
When it comes to Metro Awakening, and indeed the Metro series in general, close-quarters-combat is expected and common. Therefore, it helps to have a powerful close-range weapon. What better option is there than the Shambler shotgun?
Firing a revolving cylinder of up to six shells, the Shambler is great for taking down both human and mutant enemies alike, but will be particularly effective against Nosalises. The Shambler also has some great interactive animations, which are great fun for long-time fans of the series.
