The Forest: Best Base Locations
The Forest is an amazing survival-horror game that has a lot of options for great base builds, but choosing the right location is important.
By focusing on essential items that address shelter, food, water, and defense, a player can significantly improve their chances of surviving the first few days of the game and progress further. Some early-game items are absolutely essential, especially those that help the player secure food and store water. A secure home is also something that the player needs to construct as soon as possible, although this can be left until crafting the basics has been covered.

Weak Spear
For Defense And Hunting
Starting out in The Forest follows a pretty common survival game template. The first thing that a player needs to do is secure a source of water and food, as well as create a basic shelter. Toward these goals, they’ll need to craft something to hunt and defend themselves with. The Weak Spear is the simplest option.

The Forest: 10 Best Weapons, Ranked
To stay safe and take down monsters, players need the right weapon. Here are the best tools to stay alive in The Forest.
The Weak Spear is, well, weak, but it is good enough in the early game to kill birds and small animals to eat and also to use as a defensive weapon, as it has a nice long reach, which means cannibals can be kept at bay. As it only takes two sticks to craft, it is a no-brainer.
7
Basic Fire
For Warmth And To Cook
Once a player has crafted the Weak Spear, they have a way to hunt small game and birds, and can also spear fish in pools of water. However, eating raw meat is not advisable. Furthermore, raw meat in the player’s inventory goes bad very quickly.
Crafting the Basic Fire gives the player a way to cook any meat they manage to harvest while hunting. This makes the meat more suitable for eating, and also extends the time it takes for the meat to go bad. Furthermore, a Basic Fire is all that is needed to keep a player warm at night.
6
Hunting Shelter
Basic Protection
-
Crafting Requirements:
- Sticks: 7
- Logs: 7
- Rocks: 6
As mentioned, the Basic Ffire is all a player needs to keep warm in the cold of the night, but it still makes sense to build a Hunting Shelter early on. Having a shelter gives two benefits. First, it can be used to sleep in at night, which moves the clock forward to morning. Second, it can be used to trigger a game save.
The Hunting Shelter is quick and easy to build and can be situated right next to a Basic Fire. The player will need to use their axe (which is a spawn item) to chop down a few trees to get the necessary logs, but this is pretty quick to accomplish.
5
Water Skin
Extending Exploration Range
Food and drink are a major consideration in The Forest. Food is quite easy to come by, but fresh water is only available from pools of water, which the player can drink from. This means that, when out exploring, the player needs to find a water source regularly.

The Forest: Best Ways To Get Sticks
Sticks are needed to construct a vast range of essential items in The Forest. Here are the best ways to obtain them.
Crafting a Water Skin allows the player to carry a decent amount of water, which will keep them alive if they are exploring or hunting in a region where there is no easily accessible surface water to drink.
4
Crafted Bow
Simple Ranged Weapon
-
Crafting Requirements:
- Stick: 1
- Rope: 1
- Cloth: 1
Hunting with the Basic Spear is fine for small game, but for larger animals, a ranged weapon is a better option. The Crafted Bow is the easiest ranged weapon to make in The Forest. However, it must be said that it can take some time to master using it.
Normal arrows are pretty easy to make. They only require 1 stick and 5 feathers to make a stack of 5 arrows. Another advantage of the Crafted Bow is that it is quite stealthy, and can be used (carefully) to take out cannibals without triggering a larger attack.
3
Water Collector
Local Water Source
-
Crafting Requirements:
- Sticks: 4
- Turtle shell: 1
Even if a player has crafted a Water Skin in The Forest, they will still need to make frequent trips to a source of clean water to refill it. This can become a bit of a chore, especially if the player has built a base some distance from such a water source.
Building a Water Collector makes sense, and it is something that every player will want to craft. It collects rainwater, which players can then drink. The turtle shell is very easy to get, as there are plenty of turtles along the shoreline of every beach.
2
Small Cabinet
To Store Resources
The player inventory in The Forest is pretty small, and after just an hour or two of gameplay, there is already a need for more storage. The easiest storage container to make is the Small Cabinet, and it only takes a few logs.

The Forest: Best Light Sources
Among the available Light Sources in The Forest, some can outshine the rest in terms of practicality and availability.
However, players should consider where they want to locate their main base before starting to make storage containers, as emptying them and moving them later on is going to be a bit of a problem. There are also specialized storage containers for weapons and other specific resources such as logs.
1
Secure Base
Consider A Houseboat
-
Crafting Requirements:
- Sticks: 4
- Logs: 40
- Rope: 4
The only way to become entirely safe from cannibal attacks in The Forest, is to build a base they cannot get to. There are a few options for doing this. The player can build a tree house, or a custom-designed structure on land. However, this will still mean that cannibals can lay siege to the player’s base.
A good option is the House Boat. This can be built on the shoreline, and moved far enough out into the sea that cannibals cannot get to it. Additionally, it can be easily moved if the player decides to relocate to another area.
