A Pokemon TCG fan is sharing their stunning Christmas gift from their father-in-law, showing off a trio of special Base Set packs featuring the Kanto Starter Pokemon. Since its release in the late 1990s, Pokemon has grown into one of the largest multimedia franchises in the world with success spanning across several different mediums. The video games have seen nine different main-series entries, while the Pokemon anime and trading card game have carried on since the franchise’s start. However, one particular part of the franchise holds a special value with collectors.

The earliest iterations of the Pokemon Trading Card Game have become some of the most sought-after items for fans of the long-running monster-catching franchise. The card game’s initial sets, particularly early booster packs like Pokemon‘s “Base Set” and “Jungle” expansions, have become highly valuable due to the scarcity of sealed products. Sealed booster boxes of Pokemon‘s early sets often fetch exorbitant prices at auctions, with even single cards like the Base Set Charizard selling for six-digit totals. One fan is now showing off their unusually special sealed Pokemon gift.

Pokemon TCG is Starting 2025 With a Bang

Pokemon TCG will release the fourth special expansion for the Scarlet and Violet series in January 2025, and there is plenty of reason to get excited.

Reddit user planet_express_crew showed off their incredibly rare Pokemon gift on the franchise’s official subreddit, revealing it to be a present from their father-in-law. The image shows a set of three Pokemon Base Set booster packs, each boasting a black triangle in the bottom right corner of the pack. The misprint packs are among some of the most valuable collector items for hardcore fans of the Pokemon TCG, owing to a printing mistake made in Pokemon‘s early days. The user also shares that their father-in-law came by the packs while working for Wizards of the Coast during the Base Set launch.

Pokemon Fan Shares Rare TCG Gift

Beyond their status as packs from Pokemon‘s first set, the trio of black triangle packs boast a particularly special rarity among collectors. The “black triangle” packs are part of an extremely small set of misprinted packs from Pokemon‘s Base Set, wherein Unlimited edition packs were printed with the “1st Edition” stamp on the pack. The black triangle on the packaging blocks out the erroneous 1st Edition stamp, making the misprints extremely scarce due to their low print totals.

The extremely rare gift comes as Pokemon has often re-visited the franchise’s earliest days through special sets for the TCG. The “XY – Evolutions” set from 2016 featured reprints of several Pokemon cards from the game’s Base Set, including the elusive Charizard. Pokemon also recently re-visited the Kanto region in the TCG with the “Scarlet & Violet – 151” set, featuring each member of Pokemon‘s original cast of creatures on new cards. While Pokemon continues to grow and expand with each generation, the franchise still show love to the games that started it all.
