  • Respect and tension between LaGuerta and Batista in the original series suggested history.
  • LaGuerta’s and Batista’s early relationship exploration could foreshadow tragic events in Resurrection.

Dexter: Original Sin has given legacy fans a fascinating insight into how their favorite characters started out at Miami Metro Homicide. Maria LaGuerta’s first appearance was in the third episode of the prequel series when she turned up to start her job as an up-and-coming detective at Miami Metro. Her future husband, Angel Batista, took an instant liking to her, and this has raised the possibility of a potential romantic backstory being explored between them.

It wasn’t until the fourth season of the original show that LaGuerta and Batista began their romantic relationship, but it was never revealed if they had actually hooked up previously. This has left the door open for an exploration of how the pair of detectives became so close in the iconic location of Miami.

As soon as Maria LaGuerta strutted into the offices of Miami Metro Homicide in Dexter: Original Sin episode 3, Angel Batista was quick to introduce himself, but LaGuerta was very clear that she was there to work and not fraternize with her co-workers. It was a fascinating insight into the origins of their relationship, especially when fans know exactly how things end up. Christina Milian (who plays LaGuerta) teased how the characters’ relationship might evolve in a recent interview with TV Insider:

She’s so focused on work, and she’s so used to this one woman in a male-driven and very powerful world of men. I’m sure there’s a lot that goes on throughout time, but I think Angel has the motive to actually engage with her at some point. He’s just gotta gain the guts to do so, because she’s so strong, and she’s so smart, but it’s nice to kind of see this spark in his eye that happens the first second that they meet. And she’s not going to initially give in to it too soon because she’s a working woman. She’s focused. But you’ll see there’s something… He’s gotta work for it.

Maria LaGuerta

The spark was definitely there for Batista in that first meeting with LaGuerta, but it was also clear he’d have to work to get her attention. Before their romantic relationship became serious in the original Dexter series, there was always a mutual respect between them, but there was nothing to suggest anything had happened between them in the past. Having said that, this doesn’t mean it didn’t, and they could have evolved into close friends, until the spark was re-ignited.

What Happened To Batista And LaGuerta In The Original Dexter Series?

It was revealed that Maria LaGuerta and Angel Batista were in a romantic relationship at the beginning of the fourth season of Dexter. They faced professional ramifications due to their involvement with each other, and this is why their relationship was initially kept a secret. They officially broke up to protect their careers and avoid re-assignment, but they couldn’t keep their feelings for each other at bay, and decided to marry. This was supposed to avoid any future threats to their careers, and their secret matrimony took place in the final episode, with Dexter as the only witness. What better person to keep a secret than the guy who has been hiding his dark passenger all those years?

LaGuerta and Batista were divorced by the time the sixth season rolled around, but they remained on good terms, while also maintaining a professional working relationship. However, there was tension between the former spouses when LaGuerta accused Dexter of being the Bay Harbor Butcher, and Batista stuck up for his longtime friend. This led to LaGuerta’s death at the hands of Debra Morgan, who chose to protect Dexter’s secret. Everything looks set up for a climactic battle between Batista and Dexter in the sequel series, Resurrection. Dexter’s secret is finally out, and Batista will want to avenge the death of his former wife. The events of Original Sin, and the exploration of LaGuerta and Batista’s early relationship could eerily foreshadow the events of Resurrection, while also adding an extra layer of complexity to their relationship in the original series.
