There are many reasons as to why Dandadan has quickly become one of the biggest anime and manga series of 2024. Readers and viewers adore its lovable cast of characters, its bizarre yet fascinating world and, most important of all, its unique power system. Yukinobu Tatsu’s magnum opus is all about the conflict between aliens and spirits/yokai. Many characters in this story have received special powers from one of these supernatural creatures.

Rin Sawaki

Wields The Powers Of Mai Kawabanga / Onbusuman

• First Appearance: Chapter 54 (Manga)

Rin Sawaki is a relatively late addition to the main cast of Dandadan, but she has already proven to be an invaluable member of the team. After cleansing the Onbusuman that chased her for most of her life (which contained the soul of her deceased friend, Mai Kawabanga), Rin can now merge with her new guardian spirit to gain access to some fascinating powers.

When they were little kids, Rin and Mai always dreamed of becoming famous idols. Thus, this spiritual transformation allows the Class Rep to become one, with the added ability to manipulate gravity. Rin’s new transformation and power set were of great help during the Danmanra Arc, but she hasn’t shown any fighting abilities so far, which makes her the current weakest member of the Family.

Unji Zuma

Wields The Powers Of Futa Zuma / Umbrella Boy

• First Appearance: Chapter 136 (Manga)

Unji Zuma is a delinquent with a heart of gold who one day got access to the powers of a yokai called Umbrella Boy, who is in fact the spirit of Futa, his deceased brother. As a result, Zuma’s new transformation allows him to harness Umbrella Boy’s power. He can materialize powerful umbrellas to fight, float, and even shoot devastating shockwaves. Zuma was already an effective fighter before gaining his spiritual abilities, but he became even stronger after he mastered the use of his umbrellas.

Among the many aliens that feature in Yukinobu Tatsu’s manga, these are the strongest of them all.

However, as impressive as this power is, he is limited to only using two umbrellas, which is a huge (albeit fair) setback. When the Fairy-Tale-Card later possessed Zuma, he boosted his power and forced him to reach an even more powerful and menacing new form. According to the Yokai, it was just using Zuma’s own strength and misleading desire to destroy the world. Maybe this forced transformation was a hint of the true power that he will be able to achieve in future chapters.

Aira Shiratori

Wields The Powers Of Acrobatic Silky

• First Appearance: Chapter 10 (Manga) Episode 5 (Anime)

The conclusion of Acrobatic Silky Arc remains one of the most heartbreaking moments in Dandadan. It involves the reveal of the titular yokai’s tragic backstory, right after she decides to save Aira Shiratori’s life by sacrificing herself. Fortunately, the most popular girl of Kami High decided to hug and thank Acrobatic Silky as she was passing into the afterlife, without knowing that she had just inherited her impressive physical abilities.

The powers of this tragic spirit are all about the qualities that make up her name. Aira is stronger, faster, and more agile when she transforms, and has silky hair, which she can extend and use as tentacles or additional appendages. Aira was already quite strong when she started using her Acrobatic Silky powers in the encounter with the Serpos, but she got even stronger after going through some ruthless training and fighting a bunch of powerful aliens. Her special movie, the Pirouette Noble Drill, is especially destructive.

Jin Enjoji (Jiji)

Wields The Powers Of Evil Eye

Jin Enjoji, better known as Jiji, is quite different from all the other humans in Dandadan who can harness spiritual powers. This is because he actually loses complete control over his body when the yokai that possessed him, Evil Eye, takes over it. At first, this seemed like a huge issue for Jiji’s friends, because this is one of the most powerful evil spirits, and he’s bent on destroying all of humanity.

To make things even worse, when Evil Eye controls Jiji’s body, he wields immense physical strength and is almost impossible to take down. Due to Evil Eye’s possession and Okarun’s restriction, Jiji can now use his incredible reserves of ki in order to pull off devastating special moves. Ken Takakura (Okarun)

As expected, one of the main protagonists of Dandadan is also the strongest human with spiritual powers shown so far. At the beginning of the story, Ken Takakura (aka Okarun) was possessed by the vengeful spirit known as Turbo Granny, which allowed him to defeat the dangerous Serpos that were trying to harm his new friend, Momo Ayase. After dealing with the yokai (and losing his two “golden balls” in the process), Okarun managed to cease Turbo Granny’s possession while still retaining her powers.

Okarun’s Turbo Granny transformation looks amazing, seeing as it’s basically the face of the entire Dandadan series. It also makes him strong, agile, and fast, important properties that were boosted by his daily training exercises. With his immense power, Okarun has been able to defeat countless supernatural threats, like Nessie, Evil Eye, and the Space Globalists. These impressive victories cemented him as the most powerful human in Dandadan who can wield spiritual abilities. Tragically, he recently lost these powers after he gave them back to Turbo Granny, but she will definitely return sooner or later.
