Dragon Ball is now a series that is 40 years old. The series was first released in 1984 by the late mangaka of the series that passed earlier this year, Akira Toriyama.

As a commemoration of this major milestone for the series, the Dragon Ball Super Gallery Project was held.

Eiichiro Oda, the mangaka of One Piece, participated in it. For his contribution, he redrew the manga cover of volume 42 of Dragon Ball. This cover features Goku, Dragon Ball’s main character.

Oda’s Relation With Toriyama

Oda has always admired Toriyama, even going as far as claiming him to be a God. One Piece, his work, takes heavy inspiration from Toriyama’s Dragon Ball, as do most Shonen manga, due to the revolutionary influence it had on the industry as a whole.

Toriyama’s death was major news earlier this year, affecting many who loved the series.

Here’s what Oda had to say once about Toriyama and his love for Dragon Ball:

“I bought the first volume of the Dragon Ball manga series when I was in elementary school, but I didn’t buy the second volume! I always read the chapters through WSJ magazine, and when the final volume 42 was released, I went to the bookstore and saw it, but I didn’t buy it! I thank you for giving me this opportunity to redraw it! And now, I wish I could buy this volume while Toriyama-sensei is still alive” — Eiichiro Oda

Fans can expect to see more commemoration art from Oda towards Toriyama and Dragon Ball, especially when a new Dragon Ball event pops up. Oda has done so on countless occasions before, and he’d love to pay tribute to the legendary mangaka again.
