Summary
- Dragon Age fans have kicked off the age-old debate: should the series have tactical or action-based combat?
- This has only heated up since the launch of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, with some players struggling to return to Dragon Age: Origins.
- Others argue that the combat was at its best in Origins, with The Veilguard straying too far.
While the Dragon Age series set up a surprising amount of plot points from the very first game, one thing that hasn’t remained consistent is the combat. BioWare has played around with it in each game, with Dragon Age: The Veilguard marking the biggest change yet, as it made the game much more action-orientated.
Naturally, fans are pretty divided on this. Ever since The Veilguard launched, many have said they’re struggling to return to Dragon Age: Origins, calling for a remake of the first game in the style of the most recent. Others, however, feel the exact opposite and say that Origins’ combat is where the series peaked.
Dragon Age Fans Are Split On Which Game Has The Best Combat
Some want more action-orientated remakes, but others miss Origins’ tactical combat
This debate kicked off again recently over in the Dragon Age subreddit, with user Katking69 saying that the combat in Origins has “aged like milk.”
“I’m saying this as someone who grew up with Origins but the gameplay is so clunky and frustrating that I can never force myself to get past like 25% completion,” they say. “Even ignoring stuff like the fade section, the fact that you constantly miss your attacks especially early on is just unbearable.”
There’s a fair amount of agreement in the replies, with IonutRO writing: “Origins always had bad gameplay compared to other RPGs of the era like Neverwinter Nights 2, Risen, and Sacred 2.”
However, there are also a lot of people passionately arguing in the other direction. “This post is absolutely egregious and Origins aged like a fine wine,” says Large_External_9611.
Potential-Brain7735 agrees: “I like the combat in Origins. I like the DnD aspects, I like that I can micro manage the whole four person team, I like the tactical nature of it. “
In any case, it looks like the future of the Dragon Age series is The Veilguard’s more action-heavy approach. There aren’t many examples of RPGs getting more complicated with each instalment, after all. Whatever happens though, we have a Mass Effect game coming first.
