What We Know About Mare Jivari

As the most elusive area in Genshin Impact, Mare Jivari has been the talk of the town since Mondstadt was released. Snippets of its lore have been spread by either the Anemo Archon or the people of Natlan, yet despite this, not much is still known.

The area is something akin to Tsurumi Island, Enkanomiya, and Chasm when it comes to its mysterious nature and tragic background. This makes it way more interesting when trying to pinpoint the area’s origins, what horrors lie there, and what exactly happened to it. This article will address all these questions and speculate about the potential that lies within the Mare Jivari of Genshin Impact.

Where Is Mare Jivari Located In Genshin Impact

In the four years since Genshin Impact has been around, Mare Jivari’s location hadn’t ever been confirmed until the Version 5.2 Event Iktomi Spiritseeking Scrolls. An upcoming character, Citlali, who is the famed sage of the Masters of the Night-Wind tribe of Natlan, uncovered an image during the event quest that turned out to be the map of Mare Jivari.

She then went on to confirm that the whole region had mysteriously disappeared — practically “vanished from the face of the world” — and the only clue available is that this new map they found is where Mare Jivari was supposed to be before it went missing. Citlali also goes on to mention that Mare Jivari is located in the westernmost part of Natlan, which means the location is extremely remote, and players will probably have to pass the Collection of Plenty tribe before reaching it.

Unfortunately, Mare Jivari is not all sunshine and rainbows, since every adventurer that has ventured close to it has either been lost to the land or failed to reach it. According to Venti’s Story Quest, Mare Jivari is revealed to be an area with endlessly burning ashes where the wind fails to blow. Stanley, who was an experienced adventurer, is the first one in Genshin Impact that players hear about visiting the area, and it was an unfortunate tale to find out he sacrificed himself to save his friend. It seems he was caught in a vortex created by some kind of monster.

Nearly three years later, Genshin Impact players get confirmation of that monster through Citlali’s dialogue from the Iktomi Spiritseeking Scrolls Event. The area was apparently “reduced to a desolate wasteland after a big battle,” and the environment seems to have evolved drastically. The bones and ashes of the monsters covered the land and sometimes “bone-chilling cries could be heard from the depths.” Or worse, sometimes these cries would be drowned out by the ever-rising flames that took over the land.

The region was always mysterious and hard to venture into due to the tumultuous environment, but things got worse twenty to thirty years ago. Citlali mentions that strange things began to happen when people started discovering an “enormous, dark creature the size of a mountain roaming inside the Mare Jivari.” This is quite possibly the same monster that created the Vortex that killed Stanley from Venti’s Story Quest in Genshin Impact. Additionally, it was shortly after the discovery of this creature that the whole region suddenly disappeared off the map.

The Lavawalker Artifact Set And Its Potential Connection To Mare Jivari

Although Mare Jivari is known for its terrifying nature and hostile environment, there has been one individual who has managed to survive this Sea of Ashes. This individual has been recorded in the Lavawalker set and is referred to as ‘the Lavawalker’ simply because of his ability to walk through the flames of Mare Jivari and survive the fire. He became a sage of the Mare Jivari because he was able to traverse the entire land without succumbing to the flames. This was simply because of the power held in the artifacts he had created.

According to text from the Lavawalker artifact set, it seems there was a great bird engulfed in flames in the Mare Jivari, and the people often worshiped it since they saw the bird as a sign of nobility. It was this feather (of the phoenix) that gave the sage the power to continue onward to Mare Jivari, coming and going as he pleased. However, it’s best to keep in mind that the Lavawalker set description is merely implied to describe Mare Jivari as seen by the sage, because the difference in the environments is quite drastic when told from Stanley and Citlali’s point of view.

Unfortunately, the timeline has not been fully confirmed, and all Genshin Impact players can do is speculate with the little bit of information they have. At the end of the day, it’s best to hope for new content regarding Mare Jivari and whether the land has changed so drastically over time, or whether the environment appears differently for the various travelers that venture in.
