The SMILE Devil Fruit is a Zoan-type man-made fruit used to create artificial Devil Fruit users. SMILEs are a product of Caesar Clown with the assistance of Bloodline Elements. Dr. Vegapunk and Vinsmoke Judge discovered these Bloodline Elements while in a “lawless research team.”

Bloodline Elements are the blueprints of life itself, and those with Devil Fruits can have their power studied; Caesar then furthered this research by developing a drug called SAD, a crucial ingredient needed to produce SMILEs.

Doflamingo and Caesar’s partnership worked perfectly, as Caesar continued to create the SAD liquid on Punk Hazard; Doflamingo used his influence to protect him and the production of the product. In return, Doflamingo would gain a shipment of the SAD liquid, which he would use in his SMILE Factory on Dressrosa. This factory was placed in a hidden building on the island, where the Tontatta dwarves were used as slaves to nurture the fruit.

After the fruits were harvested, they would be sold to Kaido for his use in growing the Animal Beast Kingdom. However, as the artificial Devil Fruit was not a complete success, it did come with some failures. As Kaido and his subordinates distributed the fruit, only those worthy of eating the fruit were given a chance to become artificial Zoan users, called Gifters.

As mentioned above, for every ten fruits, only one can gift a user with the SMILE fruit powers; those who received a dud were referred to as Pleasures, as they only received the negative effects of the SMILE fruit. With the production of this fruit, many were placed in slavery by Doflamingo and Caesar Clown. Unfortunately, the Tontatta dwarves were gullible and easily believed whatever lies Doflamingo told to ensure the production of the SMILEs at their capable hands. Only after the Straw Hats assisted them in destroying the factory were they freed from the mistreatment.

A successful SMILE Devil Fruit will give the user the artificial abilities of an animal, as it is limited to Zoan types. With this, the user will gain enhanced physical abilities and attributes of the animal within the fruit. Like Devil Fruits, a SMILE fruit user will also be unable to swim after consuming the fruit. However, only 500 SMILE fruits were successful, leaving many unsuccessful duds.

As mentioned above, they were called Pleasures, and they only received the negative effects of the SMILE fruit: the inability to swim and the ability to become sad or angry. Considering the severe side effects of this artificial Devil Fruit, those consuming it are aware of its properties and adverse effects if the fruit does not choose it.

However, this is not where the devastating effects of the artificial fruit are truly demonstrated. As if to further punish the citizens in Wano Country, Kurozumi Orochi distributed the half-eaten failed SMILE Devil Fruit to the peasant citizens residing in Ebisu Town. As only one bite is needed to obtain the abilities within the SMILE Fruit, like the Devil Fruit, after the failed fruits were thrown away, Orochi distributed them to the citizens, turning them into Pleasures.

As a result, when citizens eat these failed fruits to satisfy their hunger, they will suffer all the negative effects of these failed fruits. Although producing an artificial Devil Fruit was somewhat successful, with 10% of the fruits produced creating an artificial Zoan-type user, more negative effects outweigh this 10%. As this fruit was not contained to only the Beast Pirates, the distribution of the failed SMILE fruits led to devastating effects as there had been no cure for those affected.
