Microsoft thought about releasing State of Decay 3 in 2025, but the video game giant has apparently decided to launch the game in 2026 instead, according to an industry insider. State of Decay 3 is set to be released on PC and Xbox systems.
First unveiled at 2020’s Xbox Games Showcase, State of Decay 3 is the upcoming third entry in Undead Labs’ popular series of survival horror titles. The developer said prior to the release of State of Decay 2‘s final content update in October that it would need to start focusing on its next project if it wanted to make the greatest zombie survival sim in the franchise. While Undead Labs has been quiet about its progress since then, a new rumor regarding State of Decay 3 has recently popped up and provided fans with a likely launch window for the game.

State of Decay 3 may finally be nearing its release, but it’s going to face an uphill battle if it wants to carve out its own niche.
Microsoft will let State of Decay 3 release in 2026 even though the company had previously considered having the game’s launch take place in the preceding year, Jez Corden revealed nearly an hour and 15 minutes into the latest episode of his XB2 podcast. “It’s closer to being finished than you would think, but I think they are gonna let that one slip,” Corden, who expects the third-person open-world shooter to come out in early 2026, said.
State of Decay 3 Delayed to 2026 According to Rumors
Two more first-party Xbox Game Studios teams, namely current Gears of War franchise steward The Coalition and beloved RPG maker Obsidian Entertainment, are involved in State of Decay 3‘s development. Undead Labs tapped The Coalition’s expertise on Unreal Engine 5 to harness the creation tool’s power, while Obsidian Entertainment collaborated on State of Decay 3‘s shared world feature, according to former Xbox corporate communications director Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb. Undead Labs has also worked with support firms Blind Squirrel Entertainment (Delta Force Hawk Ops, New World) and Wushu Studios (Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Fall Guys).
During XB2’s most recent episode, Corden also confirmed the accuracy of rumors regarding a remastered version of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. This modern rendition of Bethesda Game Studios’ critically acclaimed RPG should come out in 2025, he said. Aside from State of Decay 3, Corden and his two guests discussed several upcoming titles from developers under the Xbox Games Studios umbrella, including Avowed, Doom: The Dark Ages, The Outer Worlds 2, and South of Midnight. According to Corden, gamers can expect an Xbox Developer Direct and an Xbox Games Showcase to be held in 2025.
