Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s director, Masoyoshi Yokoyama, has debunked various fan theories about Project Century, saying no one has gotten anything right about its premise yet. Project Century is a brand-new game from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio. Unlike the studio’s Like a Dragon games, Project Century takes place in Japan, circa 1915, instead of modern-day.
Not much about Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s new title is known at this time, as Project Century‘s reveal at The Game Awards 2024 was fairly brief. The title has naturally led to a lot of speculation from fans, theorizing about how or if the game is connected to the greater Like a Dragon universe. However, RGG Studio head Masayoshi Yokoyama made some new comments that debunk a lot of these popular theories.

Rumor: New Game from Yakuza Studio Could Feature Surprise Celebrity Guest Star
A new social media post has fans thinking that a celebrity with plenty of video game appearances under their belt is in RGG Studios’ next game.
The most popular theory is how Project Century would chronicle the origins of the antagonistic Omi Alliance, based on the time period and setting. However, in a recent RGG Studio Broadcast (covered by GamesTalk), Yokoyama outright said that the fan theories that he’s seen are all off the mark. He noted that it would be impossible for fans to make “correct” predictions about the game’s content from the footage shown off at TGA 2024 alone. “We didn’t include any information that would enable people to guess,” said Yokoyama.
Fans Have Been Wrong About Project Century So Far
One other theory Yokoyama cleared up was the actor playing Project Century‘s lead. Upon its reveal, fans pointed out how the new protagonist looked extremely similar to Kazuki Kitamura, the actor who portrayed Kazuma Kiryu in the 2007 Like a Dragon movie adaptation. This theory led to fans believing he was the facial model or would be playing Project Century‘s protagonist. Yokoyama firmly denied this, stating that the character was completely original and was created specifically for Project Century.
As such, a lot of Project Century is still shrouded in mystery. Project Century might not even be directly connected to the Like a Dragon series beyond borrowing the latter’s gameplay mechanics. What is known about the game so far is that it takes place during the Taisho period, the protagonist wears a Happi coat, and the town shown in the gameplay trailer seems to match up with Kobe, a city in Japan’s Kansai region. When asked about when fans will hear more news about Project Century, Yokoyama said there will be no follow-up news “anytime soon,” and they will have to wait “quite a while.”
