- Custom illustrations capture Gengar’s unique traits combined with designs inspired by Gurenn Lagann and Gundam.
A talented Pokemon fan created a trio of mech designs based on Gengar and shared the incredible creations online. Like other characters in the Pokemon franchise, the popular monster has inspired plenty of fan-made artwork.
Widely regarded as one of the best Ghost-type Pokemon in the entire series, Gengar is the final form of Gastly. The frequent troublemaker, which was among the first 151 Pokemon species that were featured in the franchise’s original releases on the Nintendo Game Boy, can be easily distinguished by its roundish purple body, red eyes, large tongue, and sinister smile. An artist has managed to conceptualize several mecha versions of Gengar that still capture the Pokemon’s unique charm.

A talented Pokemon fan online creates new forms for both Combee and its female evolution, Vespiquen.
In a recent post on the Pokemon subreddit that has garnered more than a thousand upvotes, user dbolinski showed off their three mecha Gengar drawings. Two of the custom designs retained most of Gengar’s distinct traits, but the third sketch provided the Pokemon with more normal humanoid proportions. Dbolinski explained to a community member that Gurenn Lagann, the Japanese television series that is considered by many to feature one of the strongest mechs in anime, heavily influenced their art. They also admitted to having their work being influenced by the popular sci-fi mecha franchise Gundam.
Mech Versions of Pokemon’s Gengar
This is not the first time dbolinski has created mech designs that were based on a Pokemon. The talented artist produced mecha forms for Bulbasaur, Ivysaur, and Venusaur too. Much like the Gengar drawings, these custom illustrations of Generation 1’s Grass-type starter line received a lot of praise from fellow fans. One commenter on dbolinski’s past works even said that the artist should be hired to design Paradox Pokemon. There are two types of Paradox evolutions, the Future Paradox Pokemon that resemble their future relatives, and the Ancient Paradox Pokemon that look like their ancient ancestors.
Aside from Pokemon, dbolinski has also drawn characters from other beloved franchises. They recently shared their drawing of a KBT-type fighter from Medabot on the Japanese RPG series’ subreddit. Dbolinski created a mech version of Tanjiro Kamado, the main protagonist of Koyoharu Gotouge’s Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, as well. Another Reddit user, xthememoryshopx, previously drew Tanjiro’s younger sister Nezuko with Gengar and several other Pokemon, namely Alakazam, Cubone, Gastly, Haunter, and Mimikyu.
Gengar has been featured in every Pokemon game generation. Longtime series developer Game Freak is set to release the franchise’s next title, Pokemon Legends: Z-A, in 2025. The RPG will be set in Lumiose City, a location that is based on France’s capital of Paris.
