Nier is a very well-loved series from Square Enix, but it’s received little from director Yoko Taro and Square Enix over the years, outside 2B being crammed into every single game under the sun. It’s been almost eight years since the last game in the series – Nier Automata – though we have had remakes and spinoffs in Nier Replicant and Nier Reincarnation.
It’s about time that Nier gets its time in the spotlight once again, and with the 15th anniversary of the series coming in 2025, it seems as though the team behind the series are going to use the opportunity to show us what’s next. This is according to Nier Automata and Replicant producer Yosuke Saito, who teased a potential announcement in this year’s annual industry ambitions list for Japanese outlet 4Gamer.

Translated by Gematsu, Saito mentions that 2025 will be a “milestone year” for the Nier series, as it approaches its 15th anniversary on April 22 next year. Just like seemingly every developer behind the Nier series, Saito is a little bit tongue-in-cheek with his comments, acting as if he’s not quite sure what he should do, but he still very much suggests that a new Nier game announcement is on the cards.
“2025 will be a milestone year as it marks the 15th anniversary of the NieR series, so I’d like to do something for it!” says Saito. “What should we do… maybe something with the next game, or developments related to that… I’ve been hearing the fans’ expectations.”

There have been rumblings about a new Nier for a little while, ever since this year’s Nier: Orchestra Concert seemed to tease the word “R3PENT” during the show. Later in the year, Saito also made some rather cheeky comments about a game being in development, but wouldn’t elaborate on whether it was Nier or not. He simply told people to stay tuned and that he’d “have something a bit more put-together to say in the not-too-distant future”.
That comment was made back in May, so the “not-too-distant future” must be even more not-too-distant now. If Saito and Yoko Taro do have an announcement planned for the 15th anniversary of the series, then it should be here within the next four months. I’m just praying that it’s not a mobile title this time around.
