Reeves recently spoke with Digital Spy and the filmmaker shared Batman’s struggle in The Batman Part II. According to him, the superhero will find himself in a problematic spot following the destruction caused by Paul Dano’s Edward Nashton, aka The Riddler. “There’s a lot of unrest and there’s a lot of clamouring because of the revelations of what we find out at the end of the [first] movie. There’s unrest in the streets to say, ‘Well, how could this be?’. The idea that this corruption extends as deep as it extends,” Reeves shared. “In the first movie, Batman views things very simplistically, he sees things in black and white. What he can represent and how he can affect that.”
In the first film, Riddler murdered high-profile figures, including Mayor Don Mitchell Jr., Commissioner Pete Savage and District Attorney Gil Colson and terrorized Gotham. He also flooded the city after bombing the seawall. The aftermath of the incidents greatly affected Batman’s perspectives on life in general. The chaotic incidents moved Batman to examine himself, leaving him with a more nuanced point of view about the whole ordeal. With Gotham in turmoil, its residents at odds with each other and the city in division, Batman grapples with the new reality he witnessed. The corruption, inequality, and neglect created a condition of crime and despair, and some good people were forced to do bad things to survive. “How does Batman fit into that? Where do you fit? It’s not as clear as going, ‘Oh yeah, bad guy, I go after bad guys,'” Reeves explained. “And when things are in grey, it makes it very hard to be Batman, so this is part of the challenge as we enter it.”
There was a breakdown of communication and division in the first movie, The Batman, reflecting the real-world challenges of polarization and distrust. With Reeves highlighting the grey area, he is moving Batman from the simple hero vs. villain dynamic into a deeper storyline where he could see that some villains are victims of their circumstances.
