Now that James Gunn’s DCU has officially kicked off, it’s becoming even more apparent that there is a connective tissue that stems out from Creature Commandos. More specifically, the connective tissue for the DCU is Frank Grillo’s character in Creature Commandos, Rick Flagg Sr.
Grillo is no rookie when it comes to being a being part of an interconnected universe based on comic book stories. Grillo got his first taste of that world when he was working with the MCU as Hydra agent Brock Rumlow and then eventually Crossbones. However, his character was killed off at the beginning of Captain America: Civil War and he was free to jump over to the DCU. Because of that experience, Grillo is one of the very few who can really reflect on what it’s like to be part of Marvel’s MCU and the new DCU.

Creature Commandos Actor Prefers Being Part Of The DCU
Grillo recently talked to Entertainment Weekly about working in both the MCU and DCU and it’s clear that he prefers to be working with James Gunn and company as this particular interconnected universe gets off the ground. “They’re very different,” Grillo told the publication. “Marvel’s a different machine, and it’s great in its own right, but the thing I love about James’ and Peter’s DC is that it’s much more contained. It’s so much more personal and I really enjoy it better.”
Grillo went on make it clear that he likes that he’s getting in on the ground floor of the DCU, where in contrast, he joined the MCU as it had really started to get rolling. He first pops up at the beginning of Captain America: Winter Soldier and it’s soon divulged that rather than being an operative of S.H.I.E.L.D. he’s a double agent working alongside other double agents as members of Hydra. He plays an important role in the MCU as someone who is first leaned on as an important ally and then a dangerous enemy, but he was also not around all that long. At the moment, it appears that he’ll be part of the DCU for quite a while. Grillo has even referred to himself as the Nick Fury of the DCU.

Grillo is first playing a starring role in Creature Commandos as Flagg Sr. In fact, he’s on screen more than any of the rather interesting rogues gallery of monsters in that animated show. The actor has said that he will also have a prominent role in Peacemaker Season 2 when it hits HBO Max next fall.
On the other hand, Grillo has said that his role in Superman won’t be anywhere near as big. The Creature Commandos star said Flagg will “drop in” but won’t be center to the plot. It would appear that more than ever, this is the proof that Gunn is making sure these projects are all tied together, but that the actor’s parts in these shows varies depended on whether he’s really needed ot contribute.
