Best Soulslike Games Of 2024

Ever since the release of Demon’s Souls and the subsequent Dark Souls trilogy, ‘soulslike’ has been used to describe games that thrive on how difficult they are. FromSoftware’s games have created a whole new sub-genre of its own, resulting in a slew of releases that have risen to match its reputation for near-unbeatable bosses, intriguing storytelling and immersive atmospheres.

You never truly leave the Zone

2024 does not lack soulslike games for fans of the Dark Souls series to try their hand at, from old classics to new releases. And with 2025 closing in, we felt it was high time for us to shine the spotlight on some of the best soulslike games of 2024.

9

Enotria: The Last Song

The brainchild of Italian game developer and publisher Jyamma Games, Enotria: The Last Song takes inspiration from the Italian Renaissance period in its character designs, locations and lore. You play as the Maskless One, whose destiny is to defeat the Authors to free the world from the tyrannical grip of the Canovaccio.

The game’s combat system bears a lot of similarities to FromSoftware titles like the Dark Souls Trilogy, but the bosses drop different masks that allow you to switch up your playstyle, based on your preferences. From lovely seaside towns to Venetian-style palaces, the amazing visuals, atmospheric locations and cultural-infused, lore-rich story make for a stunning soulslike title.

8

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn

A soulslike, open-world game developed by indie game developer A44 Games, Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn sees you play as the gun-toting Nor Vanek in a war-ravaged world overrun by the Dead. The game has a very gunpowder, steampunk-esque feel to it, with unique character designs pertaining to the god Nor..

You have the benefit of a magical god companion named Enki to fight by your side, and the story takes its time to fill you in on the world and its lore. It’s certainly not in the vein of Wukong or Elden Ring, where you just might stumble into a boss fight by accident.but Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn excels in a game’s foremost criterion: to entertain.

7

Morbid: The Lords of Ire

Morbid: Lords Of Ire - Hitting A Skull Monster With A Large Fire Covered Hammer.

Following in the footsteps of 2020’s Morbid: The Seven Acolytes, its sequel, Morbid: The Lords of Ire, takes things to new heights. Now with 3D graphics (unlike its predecessor), The Striver returns to assume her duty once more, tasked with defeating the returning Grahar gods in the land of Ire.

This hack-and-slash RPG does not pull its punches when it comes to its bosses and the eldritch horrors that they are. Moreover, you use runes to buff your weapons, but you have to be strategic since these upgrades always come at a cost. Although there’s a sanity system involved, you can generally slash and slice to your heart’s content without it feeling intrusive.

6

Deathbound

Brazilian game developer Trialforge Studio makes its first foray into the world of game creation with its soulslike title, Deathbound. The game is set in a grim, dark world that is a blend of medieval crusader and 21st century scientific advancement with a sprinkle of sorcery in it.

Nine Sols: 6 Best Skills To Unlock

Unlock the best skills for your journey and transform Yi into a martial arts master in Nine Sols.

Unlike the other soulslike games on this list, Deathbound operates on a party-based system. Starting with the Paladin of Death Therone Guillaumen, you’ll gradually pick up the ‘essences’ of the dead throughout your playthrough, and are able to switch between these characters with varying skillsets. The storylines for each of these characters are well-thought-out and gripping, with impeccable voice acting and fluid combat. If you’re looking for something innovative and unique in the subgenre, then Deathbound would be right up your alley.

Another Crab’s Treasure

While most soulslike games possess a gritty, dark feel to their environment, Another Crab’s Treasure appears to be the odd one out. Developed by Aggro Crab, the game’s vibrant, bright atmospheres and cartoonish animations should not fool you, however, as it requires you to strategise, plan and familiarise yourself with attack patterns as with all soulslike games.

You play as a hermit crab named Kril who has lost his shell and is forced to improvise using the scraps he can find in the trash heaps collected at the bottom of the sea. As one of the smallest sea creatures in existence, all the bosses feel bigger and badder than they usually are. Overall, the game does a swell job of blending comedy and the sobering reality of humanity’s mistreatment of nature, while creating a super fun experience for all to enjoy.

4

Rise Of The Ronin

From the creators of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty and the Nioh series, this year Team Ninja comes swinging with Rise of the Ronin. The story is set in the 1800s, a time when Japan officially opened its doors to outsiders, leading to violent internal clashes that border on civil war. You play as one of the Blade Twins, a member of the Veiled Edge, intent on overthrowing the Tokugawa Shogunate.

The game offers character customisation, as well as the opportunity to switch player characters between either Blade Twin (although this option closes after one of them dies). The combat is very fluid and smooth and each boss is challenging in their own way, with unique movesets that you’ll have to adapt to. Paired with a profound and impactful narrative, Rise of the Ronin proves another win for Team Ninja.

3

Nine Sols

Born from the imaginative minds of those responsible for 2017’s psychological horror Detention, Nine Sols is yet another notch on the belt of Taiwanese developer RedCandleGames. The game combines striking visuals, intricate lore and an interesting blend of Asian culture and futuristic sci-fi elements.

The story centres on Yi, who was one of the Ten Sols, only to be betrayed by his kin. He is determined to defeat them and, depending on your choices, save the humans under his watch or doom them entirely and return to his home world of Penglai. Nine Sols is a soulslike Metroidvania with suitably difficult bosses, an engaging combat system, compelling locations, map designs and one of its main highlights: a gorgeous, sleek art style.

2

Elden Ring

Elden Ring proved another smash hit for FromSoftware, a collaborative effort between the developers and Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin. Set in the Lands Between, the Tarnished sets out in a bid to ascend to be the Elden Lord. The game’s expansive, well-designed map is what makes it a standout among other FromSoftware titles, as well as the extremely helpful feature of summoning Spirit Ashes to assist during particularly tough boss fights.

Black Myth: Wukong

Black Myth: Wukong came out guns blazing, a loving ode to the 16th-century classic Journey to the West. You play as The Destined One, venturing out from Mount Huaguo to collect all six relics of Sun Wukong. However, there are massive hurdles to overcome in the form of supremely difficult bosses to stand in your way.

From the first chapter all the way to the last, it’s a boss rush seeped with rich lore that just sucks you in. The game stands out due to its bosses implementing their own form of martial arts (especially the humanoid ones) which may be an adjustment for some. However, the sheer creativity in character designs and exploration of various modes of storytelling makes this soulslike game one to watch this year.
