Summary
- The writers of the Sonic trilogy have shared what other games they’d love to turn into movies.
- Top of their wishlist is The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker.
- A live-action Zelda film is already in the works, but they’ve put the idea of a Wind Waker spin-off out into the universe.
Whether you’re a Sonic sicko like me or not, it’s hard to deny at this point that writers Josh Miller and Pat Casey have done a fantastic job helping to adapt the games for the big screen. Such a good job that you’d like to think they’re among the most in-demand video game movie writers in the industry right now, and if anyone’s eyeing them up for work, there’s a certain Zelda game they’d love to adapt in the future.
Speaking with IGN about their work on Sonic 3, Miller and Casey were asked if there were any other series they’d love to write movies for in the future, and Miller had a very interesting, and specific, answer.
When we played Wind Waker, we were always like, man, I mean, it would probably be weird if they made a Zelda movie to start with Wind Waker versus the more classic Hyrule. But we both loved Wind Waker and it’s so cinematic… After they make this Zelda movie, I guess we’re putting it out there in the world, maybe we can do a Wind Waker spin-off.
As Miller notes, Nintendo has already confirmed a live-action Zelda movie is in the works. However, we don’t know much about it, including when exactly on the complex Zelda timeline the movie will take place. Like Miller also says, it would be odd if Nintendo kicked off what will presumably be a series of Zelda movies by adapting The Wind Waker, particularly in live-action, but you never know.
The Sonic Trilogy’s Writers Want To Work On A Wind Waker Adaptation
If There’s Anyone In The Industry That I’d Trust With This Hypothetical Project
One thing we do know is Miller and Casey haven’t been asked to write the Zelda movie. That honor has gone to Derek Connolly, best known for his work on the Jurassic World films. I don’t want to cast judgment on the movie this early, especially when we know next to nothing about it, but I’d feel much more confident about it if the writers of the Sonic trilogy were in charge of the script.
There is more video game goodness to come from Casey and Miller, and I’m not just talking about Sonic 4 which was confirmed to be coming in 2027 the day before Sonic 3 hit cinemas. The pair has also been recruited to write the script for It Takes Two’s adaptation. A project we know as little about as the Zelda movie, possibly because Hazelight’s focus has been on upcoming co-op game Split Fiction.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker was a divisive game upon release, as the cartoon-style graphics put off fans that were expecting a more realistic Zelda game. However, the game is today considered one of the franchise’s best entries, and the visuals have held up exceptionally well. Aside from the visuals, the game’s standout feature is its sailing.
