ReFantazio Lead Hopes To Make A Sequel

Metaphor: ReFantazio is one of the standout games of 2024. After the success of the Persona series, Studio Zero’s newest RPG IP was received very well, bagging the best narrative, best art direction, and best RPG awards at The Game Awards, and even securing a nomination for Game of the Year.

With a sharp eye on political systems, Metaphor fits 2024’s news cycle like no other.

With the game getting so much love, fans are already wondering what’s next for the Metaphor IP. Considering the Persona series has received so many installments, will the developers decide to make a sequel, or even turn it into a long-running series? Studio director Katsura Hashino is currently enjoying the fruits of Studio Zero’s labour, and hasn’t really thought about what’s next.

In an interview with Japanese magazine Famitsu, which was leaked by ryokutya2089 (thanks, VG247), Hashino admitted that while he hasn’t been actively working on a sequel for Metaphor: ReFantazio, he has some ideas about the direction he’d like to take if the studio decides to build on the success of the game.

We only got a few snippets of the interview, so we’ll only know the full extent of Hashino’s thoughts once the entire interview is published. However, he did say that if a sequel was to be developed, he’d like to base it in a historical setting. “If I decide that the best setting for a future title is the Sengoku period, it might turn into a JRPG with a world like the Basara series,” he laughed.

While he did reveal that “There are no concrete plans to make Metaphor into a series,” he also does “hope it can become a series one day.”

It’s unlikely that Studio Zero will drop the IP after this, as he also said, “Since the project started with the goal of creating a third JRPG series alongside Shin Megami Tensei and Persona, I’d like to develop it into a flagship title that represents our company.”

In her review for Metaphor: ReFantazio, our very own Meg Pelliccio agreed that the IP needs another installment, saying, “Metaphor: ReFantazio is a new peak for Atlus. It takes so much of what was great about Persona, refines it, and throws that powder into an exciting fantasy setting with incredible lore, well-developed characters, and a fresh new battle system.

“The undeniable appeal and quality of Metaphor leaves me confident we’ll be seeing a lot more from this series, as there’s no way Atlus could leave this as a one and done deal.”
