Mortal Kombat 1 Developer Reveals Near-Final Version Of Kung Jin

Summary

  • Earlier this month, it was reported that Mortal Kombat 1’s third Kombat Pack has been cancelled.
  • One of the characters said to be in that DLC is Mortal Kombat X’s Kung Jin, who appeared in the game’s story mode very briefly.
  • A character artist has since posted a few renders of Kung Jin, suggesting was indeed being worked on for the game.

A character artist who has done work for NetherRealm Studios has shared a near-final design for Kung Jin in Mortal Kombat 1, potentially supporting a rumour that suggested he was part of the cancelled Kombat Pack 3.

From its blood-soaked, ESRB-starting inception to its fumbled crossover with DC, Mortal Kombat is no stranger to controversy and underwhelming games. That all came to a head last year with the release of Mortal Kombat 1 which, despite having some of the series’ best gameplay, was panned by players due to its “predatory” item shop, grinding, and missing features.

Mortal Kombat 1 Needs More Gaming Guest Characters

Mortal Kombat often celebrates its history with action and horror icons, but gaming is part of that legacy too.

Although some great DLC characters in Kombat Pack 1 and 2 made it seem as if Mortal Kombat 1 was about to have its big comeback (or would that be komeback?), that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. A few weeks ago, it was reported that Warner Bros. cancelled Kombat Pack 3 and halted development on the game, leaving its future a little uncertain.

Kung Jin’s Mortal Kombat 1 Design Shared By Character Artist

The rumours of Kombat Pack 3 being cancelled haven’t yet been confirmed by NetherRealm Studios, but the leaker who started it all, _FateUnknown_, went on to say that it would have mainly focused on Mortal Kombat characters instead of guests. One of the characters said to be included in KP3 was Mortal Kombat X’s Kung Jin, who made a brief cameo in the game’s story mode.

While it’s unclear if we’ll ever know for sure whether that rumour was true, a new render posted by a character artist who has worked for NetherRealm Studios seems to have supported the claims. As shared by Redditor Blaguar on the Mortalkombatleaks subreddit, the render comes from Collider Craftworks character artist Sergio Nicolas Benitez, who shared the images on ArtStation.

As you can see from the post above, the renders show what appears to be a near-final version of Kung Jin’s design in Mortal Kombat 1, which is quite different from his MKX appearance. Interestingly, the post claims that Kung Jin was going to be a Kameo in the game and not an individual character, which does go against the Kombat Pack 3 rumours.

The design shown in the new render resembles what we saw of Kung Jin in Mortal Kombat 1’s finale, albeit with a less evil colour scheme.

That being said, the fact that Benitez shared the render out of nowhere despite Kung Jin not being in Mortal Kombat 1 as a Kameo or playable fighter does suggest that any work that was being done on the character has been cancelled. If the loveable archer was going to be in MK1, it’s unlikely that the art would have been shared until his release.
