Is Sailing Through The New World Really That Dangerous?

Is Sailing Through The New World Really That Dangerous?

Summary

  • Sailing in the New World is not as deadly as anticipated, with pirates posing a greater threat than the terrain.
  • Main characters effortlessly navigate the New World, potentially skewing perceptions of its true danger.
  • Elite pirates like the Emperors overshadow natural threats in the New World, making sailing seem less perilous.

The Grand Line, especially its latter half, called the New World, is considered to be the most dangerous place in One Piece. Filled with abnormal weather, dangerous monsters, and deadly pirates, when sailing in these locations, only the toughest can survive. Even the Straw Hats, a formidable pirate crew, needed two years of training before they could enter One Piece’s New World without any substantial risks.

However, after entering the New World, the most dangerous sea in One Piece seems to be anything but lethal. Despite being set up as an extremely dangerous place to sail, the weather and creatures of the New World itself aren’t nearly as deadly as the pirates who sail the sea. Although this could just be a result of Oda expediting the sailing process in One Piece, it does beg the question; is the New World really that dangerous to sail in?

The New World Built To Be The Scariest Part Of One Piece

Massive Animals And Dangerous Weather Make The Grand Line Lethal

The Grand Line of One Piece is divided into two sections, Paradise and the New World. While the former is deemed to be fairly dangerous, compared to the New World, it’s a walk in the park, earning it the nickname Paradise. The New World, on the other hand, is touted as being almost inhospitable, unless the person living there is allied with some major force, like an Emperor or World Government.

Outside of the dangers, this is largely because of the unique weather, flora, and fauna that lurks in the New World. Weather in the New World reaches an almost magical status, with impossible lightning storms, raining fire, and huge waterspouts being a common occurrence. The creatures of the New World are also considered to be just as lethal, with deadly poisonous fish and massive pods of whales, the same species as Laboon, lurking in the water, taking out any pirate foolish enough to explore their waters.

  • Sailing In The New World Is Not A Threat To The Straw Hats
  • Emperors Are The Real Threat Of The New World

However, despite being built up as the most dangerous thing in One Piece, the Straw Hat Crew’s journey in the New World, at times, has felt anything but dangerous. Although the crew has run into some complications while sailing, like Luffy getting poisoned, more often than not, traveling through the New World feels no more dangerous than the Grand Line before it. With almost every member of the Worst Generation, even without an extensive training arc, easily navigating the seas of One Piece’s New World as well, it may not be near as deadly, sailing-wise.

One Piece: What Is The Best Laugh In One Piece?

Although many characters in One Piece have an iconic laugh, only one has the best in the whole series.

In fact, many of the most dangerous parts of the New World are the pirates who live there. Overall, the Emperors that live in the latter half of the Grand Line are the biggest threat there. Any Worst Generation member who has been defeated on the island has been taken out by another pirate group. Although it would be a bit unceremonious to see a group taken out by a powerful storm or giant sea monster, it would definitely make the New World seem more dangerous. The sheer strength of the Emperors makes any other New World threat seem inconsequential.

However, while it may not seem like sailing the Grand Line is dangerous, that doesn’t mean it isn’t dangerous. Luffy and the Straw Hats, as well as many members of the Worst Generation, have a variety of skills and strengths that make navigating the Grand Line far easier than an average pirate. The characters that the audience is shown navigating the New World tend to be powerful enough to handle the threats there. If an average pirate crew was shown navigating the New World, they most likely would be quickly killed by a storm or monster.

It looks like the entrance to hell. – Zoro about the New World

In the end, while the New World in One Piece may not seem that deadly, it may be a result of seeing the story through the eyes of a very powerful pirate crew. However, the sailing aspects of the New World could use a few more threats to make them feel as deadly as they actually are. Sadly, it seems that One Piece is at a point in the story where it can’t afford to waste time on inconsequential moments like struggling to sail through the New World.
