From ARR to Endwalker, here’s how to unlock every optional dungeon in Final Fantasy XIV.
Once obtained, unique hairstyles can be applied to characters using the Aesthetician at an inn or at your home. Even those who don’t like all the current FF14 hairstyles still have hope as more get released with almost every new patch. With that in mind, let’s take a look at every unique hairstyle in the game, and how to get them.
Updated December 26, 2024 by Jacob Whaling: We’ve included new hairstyles that have been added since our last update, as well as updated hairstyles that have become available to more races.
Hairstyles Received From Dungeons, Duties, And Raids
Battle-Ready Bobs And Scanning for Style
- Usable by all races.
- The 2B hairstyle can only be used by female characters.
- The 9S hairstyle can only be used by male characters.
- Available on the Market Board.
These two hairstyles are available at the end of The Tower of Paradigm’s Breach, the third alliance raid in the Nier: Automata crossover content for level 80 characters.
The entire alliance can vote for the hair, though, so it may take many tries before obtaining one of these hairstyles.
Early To Rise
- Unavailable for female Hrothgar.
- Available on the Market Board.
This hairstyle is a rare drop from Delubrum Reginae. To unlock Delubrum Reginae, you must complete story quests in the Bozjan Southern Front, which is unlocked at level 80.
However, it’s a dungeon many grind anyway to get their Resistance Weapons fully upgraded. If you aren’t having luck getting this hairstyle to drop from Delubrum Reginae, you can also purchase it from another player at the Market Board.
Samsoian Locks
- Unavailable for female Hrothgar.
- Available on the Market Board.
Released in patch 3.4, the Samsonian Locks hairstyle can be found and unlocked in the Palace of the Dead. This hairstyle drops from the Bronze-trimmed Sacks that can be earned from the Accursed Hoard at early levels of the Palace.
Wind Caller
- Unavailable for female Hrothgar.
- Available on the Market Board.
Wind Caller is the only hairstyle that can be purchased with Bozjan Clusters. That means you must undertake the Bojzan Southern Front content and collect clusters by defeating enemies in that area.
The hairstyle can be purchased for 150 Bozjan Clusters from the Resistance Quartermaster in the Bozjan Southern Front (X:14.2, Y:29.6).
Form And Function
- Usable by all races except Hrothgar.
The Form and Function hairstyle is a rare drop from Pyros Lockboxes, earned from The Forbidden Land, Eureka Pyros. These boxes drop from completing various FATEs in the area.
Both Ways
- Unavailable for female Hrothgar.
- Available on the Market Board.
Released in patch 5.55, Both Ways gives characters a braid and a side-ponytail in a single hairstyle. The hair is a rare drop from lockboxes on Zadnor. Keep in mind that Zadnor will only be available after completing the main quest in Bozja.
Gyr Abanian Plait
- Usable by all races except Hrothgar.
- Available on the Market Board.
The Gyr Abanian Plait hairstyle is unique to Heaven-on-High and can be obtained by discovering pieces of the Accursed Hoard there. Alternatively, you can purchase this hairstyle from another player on the Market Board, but, due to its rarity in Heaven-on-High, it is usually quite expensive.
A Close Shave
- Unavailable for female Hrothgar.
- Available on the Market Board.
A Close Shave is a clean, short hairstyle that was added in patch 6.35. This hairstyle is a random drop from Bronze-tinged Sacks obtained from Eureka Orthos, the third Deep Dungeon.
Bronze-tinged Sacks are relatively easy to get, but this hairstyle is a rare drop from them, leading to its higher price on the Market Board.
Ambitious Ends
- Unavailable for female Hrothgar.
- Available on the Market Board.
Ambitious Ends is a wavy hairstyle added in patch 6.45. This hairstyle can be unlocked for use by trading six Rokkon Potsherds to Trisassant in Old Sharlayan (X:12.0, Y:13.3).
Rokkan Potsherds are earned from the Mount Rokkon Variant Dungeon that was also added in patch 6.45.
The Bold And The Braid
- Unavailable for female Hrothgar.
- Available on the Market Board.
The Bold and the Braid is a long half-braided hairstyle added in Patch 6.51. This hairstyle is also unlocked through Variant Dungeons.
To get The Bold and the Braid, you’ll need to trade six Aloalo Potsherds to Trisassant in Old Sharlayan. These can be obtained from the Aloalo Island Variant Dungeon.
It Takes Two
- Usable by all races.
- Available on the Market Board
It Takes Two is another short hairstyle with a middle part. This one drops randomly from opening the treasure chest found after deciphering a Timeworn Br’aaxskin Map.
You can get one Timeworn Br’aaxskin Map each day by gathering them from level 100 Mining or Logging nodes, or you can buy them on the Market Board.
Doing The Wave
- Usable by all races.
- Available on the Market Board
Doing the Wave is a wavy hairstyle that is based on a winning entry from the 2023 Hairstyle Design Contest. This hairstyle is a random drop from treasure chests in Cenote Ja Ja Gural, which is randomly accessible after opening a treasure chest found from a Timeworn Br’aaxskin Map.
This means you’ll first need to gather a Timeworn Br’aaxskin Map, decipher it, find the treasure chest, clear out the monsters guarding it, and then hope a portal to the dungeon opens when you open the chest. Then, you’ll have to get lucky enough inside the dungeon to not only continue into its deeper rooms, but also get this hairstyle as a drop. Or, you can buy it from someone else on the Market Board.
Hairstyles Received From The Gold Saucer
Adventure
- Unavailable for female Hrothgar.
Released in patch 3.1, these hairstyles appear differently depending on the character’s chosen gender. The male version has a brushed sideways look, while the female has a bow and ponytail. Unfortunately, the bow is not dyeable.
This hairstyle can be purchased for 14 MGP from the Modern Aesthetics Saleswoman in the Gold Saucer (X:5.4, Y:6.5).
Ponytails
This ponytail-styled hair is another product of the Gold Saucer. However, instead of getting it from the Modern Aesthetics Saleswoman, it’s bought and unlocked at the Prize Claim counter for 8,000 MGP under the “other” options in Prize Exchange III. This NPC is located at (X:5.4, Y:6.5).
Curls
- Usable by all races except Viera and Hrothgar.
Like the Ponytails hairstyle, Curls can be claimed by the Prize Claim NPC at the Gold Saucer. It’s a little more pricey, costing 9,600 MGP.
This hairstyle is unisex and was released in Patch 3.1.
Lexen-Tails
- Usable by all races except Viera and Hrothgar.
This hairstyle will be for sale at the Gold Saucer after you complete The City of Lost Angels quest as well as The Orbonne Monastery raid. This means anyone lower than level 70 isn’t going to have access to this hairstyle.
Once the requirements are completed, the hairstyle can be purchased for 50,000 MGP from the Gold Saucer Attendant prize claim. Only female characters get the bow, while male characters are without one.
Great Lengths
- Unavailable for female Hrothgar.
Released in patch 5.0, this hairstyle can be bought from the Gold Saucer Attendant for 30,000 MGP. While the long hair is beautiful, keep in mind that longer hair usually clips into a lot of armor in the game.
Rainmaker
- Unavailable for female Hrothgar.
After a long period of being unobtainable, the Rainmaker hairstyle has returned to the Gold Saucer for good. This hairstyle can be purchased for 5,000 MPG from the Modern Aesthetic Saleswoman (X:5.4, Y:6.5) in the Gold Saucer.
Hairstyles Received Through Events
Strife
- Usable by all races except Viera and Hrothgar.
Strife is another hairstyle that is currently impossible to obtain. It is the beloved hairstyle of Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy 7.
This hairstyle was only awarded to those who participated in various contests, such as the 2019 Fan Festivals and the 2024 screenshot competition.
Lucian Locks
- Usable by all races except Viera and Hrothgar.
This hairstyle was given out in the 2019 event, A Nocturne for Heroes. During the event, you could quest with Noctis from Final Fantasy 15.
The event was brought back in early 2022, allowing a fresh batch of players to participate. Between the great glam and cool car, A Nocturne for Heroes has a lot going for it, and the Lucian Locks only serve to enhance it all.
When this quest is active, this hairstyle can be purchased for 20,000 MGP from the Ironworks Vendor (X:5.0, Y:6.0) at the Gold Saucer.
Hairstyles Obtained Through Skybuilder’s Scrips
Modern Legend
- Unavailable for female Hrothgar.
- Available on the Market Board.
This hairstyle is purchased for 1,800 Skybuilder’s Scrips, earned by completing Ishgardian Restoration tasks in the Firmament.
You can purchase the Modern Legend hairstyle from Enie in the Firmament (X:12.0, Y:14.0)
Controlled Chaos
- Usable by all races.
- Available on the Market Board.
Controlled Chaos is much like Modern Legend, as it is another hairstyle that can be bought with 1,800 Skybuilder Scripts from Enie. It’s a unisex hairstyle that is short on one side and long on the other.
Saintly Style
- Unavailable for female Hrothgar.
- Available on the Market Board.
The Saintly Style is another hairstyle option for players to purchase from Enie with 1,800 Skybuilder’s Scripts. Like the other two, it is a short cut as well as unisex.
Hairstyles Earned From PvP
Styled For Hire
- Unavailable for female Hrothgar.
Released in FF14’s patch 4.4, this hairstyle can only be received through the payment of 18,000 Wolf Marks.
Wolf Marks are earned through a variety of the game’s PvP modes. Even if PvP isn’t your cup of tea, this hairstyle is worth playing a few matches to get.
Fashionably Feathered
- Unavailable for female Hrothgar.
The Fashionably Feathered hairstyle can be purchased for 18,000 Wolf Marks from the Mark Quartermaster in the Wolves Den Pier (X:4.4, Y:6.0).
Hairstyles From The Mogstation
Sharlayan Studies
- Unavailable for female Hrothgar.
To get the hairstyle, you’ll need to purchase the Alphinaud’s Attire set on the Mogstation. This bundle will grant you Alphinaud’s original costume and his unique hairstyle, usable by male and female characters.
Eternal Bonding Hairstyle
- Usable by all races except Viera and Hrothgar.
This hairstyle is Mogstation-bought with real-world money. Players must get the Eternal Bond bundle, which allows two players to marry each other in the game.
The hairstyle is not commonly used, however, the Eternal Bond bundle is one of the bestsellers on the Mogstation with players also getting unique clothes, a quest, and a two-person mount.
The hairstyle is unisex, but the female characters get little flowers added to their hair (not to be confused with the flowers on the ceremony veil).
The Scion Special Issues
- Usable by all races except Viera and Hrothgar.
These three hairstyles can only be acquired by purchasing the Minfilia’s, Thancred’s, or Y’shtola’s Attire bundle from the Mogstation. These bundles include the original character’s outfit and hairstyle.
Only female characters can use the Y’shtola and Minfilia bundle, while only male characters can use the Thancred bundle.
Pulse Hairstyle
These two hairstyles were created to commemorate the release of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. Like Minfilia’s hair, this hairstyle is not sold on its own but as part of a bundle in Snow’s and Lightning’s Attire on the Mogstation.
The Pulse Hairstyle will show up as Snow’s hairstyle for male characters and Lightning’s hairstyle for female characters.
Master And Commander
- Usable by all races except Viera and Hrothgar.
By purchasing the Aymeric Attire bundle from the Mogstation, you can get the Master and Commander hairstyle. This bundle comes with Aymeric’s unique outfit and hairstyle and can be used by both male and female characters.
Liberating Locks
- Usable by all female races except female Hrothgar.
The Liberating Locks hairstyle is Lyse’s unique hairstyle, and can only be acquired by purchasing the Lyse’s Leadership Attire set from the Mogstation, which includes Lyse’s outfit and her hairstyle.
Sharlayan Rebellion
- Unavailable for female Hrothgar.
Sharlayan Rebellion is strikingly similar to the Sharlayan Studies hairstyle, which makes sense, considering these hairstyles are based on Alisaie and Alphinaud’s hairstyles, respectively. Despite their similarities, Sharlayan Rebellion is a separate hairstyle that must be purchased from the Online Store, but it is also included in the Brand-new Alisaie’s Attire costume set from the Online Store.
Hairstyles Earned Through Island Sanctuary
Tall Tails
- Unavailable for female Hrothgar.
This hairstyle can be purchased for 6,000 Seafarer Cowries from the Horrendous Hoarder in the Hideaway of your Island Sanctuary (X:12.6, Y:28.4).
This currency is earned in a variety of ways by completing tasks on your Island, like making items for the Workshop or developing your Island.
Practical Ponytails
- Unavailable for female Hrothgar.
Similar to the Tall Tails hairstyle, Practical Ponytails can also be purchased from your Island Sanctuary for 6,000 Seafarer Cowries. Craft items at your Workshop and set up efficient deliveries to rake in enough Cowries to buy this hairstyle.
