Why the Oculi Adventure Items Have an Uncertain Future

The Oculi collectibles in Genshin Impact are tied to a region and its respective Element, and considering that there are currently only seven Elements in Genshin Impact, this means that there are presumably only Seven different types of Oculi. Consequently, since future updates for Genshin Impact are already on track to expand far beyond seven different regional nations, this naturally creates uncertainty for the future of the Oculi adventure items and what the progression systems for future regions could look like.

This fork in the road concerning Genshin Impact’s Oculi collectibles is seemingly inevitable, though the potential solutions to this situation could be quite favorable. Elemental Oculi could potentially be replaced by a new collectible-based progression system, otherwise, solutions that expand upon the existing regions or introduce new Elements in Genshin Impact would allow Oculi to retain their current functionality.

While Genshin Impact’s character roster continues to grow with every update, one missing character role seems unlikely to be filled any time soon.

Genshin Impact’s Regional Oculi Collectibles Face an Inevitable Challenge

For now, Genshin Impact still has one more opportunity for an upcoming region to introduce a new type of Oculi adventure item. With the Snezhnaya region in Genshin Impact being the land of the Cryo Archon, this region will surely introduce the Cryoculus as the Cryo equivalent of the Oculi collectibles.

Whether or not Snezhnaya will be the next region after Natlan remains to be seen, although regardless of when Snezhnaya releases, the Oculi collectibles will face an inevitable challenge. Considering that the Cryoculus will be the last Elemental Oculi of the seven Elements in Genshin Impact, this has major implications for the future of collectible-based progression systems for any future regions that get introduced to the game. In other words, the Oculi adventure items could be entirely removed or replaced by another progression system by this point.

How Genshin Impact Could Address Oculi Collectibles for Future Regions After Snezhnaya

  • Expanding upon existing regions would allow Genshin Impact to reuse the existing Elemental Oculi temporarily
  • New regions could replace Elemental Oculi with a similar collectible-based progression system
  • Adding new Elements to Genshin Impact could expand upon the variety of Elemental Oculi

Similar to how the Chasm expands upon Liyue, treating new regions in Genshin Impact as expansions of existing regions allows their respective Elemental Oculi to remain in use. However, while expanding upon existing regions could help to resolve some of Genshin Impact’s lingering mysteries surrounding Teyvat, not expanding upon the game with new regions after the current Archon Questline ends could limit the potential for new stories and characters to shine, hence only providing a seemingly temporary solution.

Another way future regions in Genshin Impact could rework Oculi items is for other region-specific collectibles to become the primary progression system, much like how the Frostbearing Tree in Dragonspine uses Crimson Agate collectible adventure items instead of Anemoculus. Considering that many longtime players have likely already reached the maximum stamina capacity, Oculi collectibles have little to no exclusive rewards for these players to earn, so replacing Elemental Oculi with a new progression system is arguably long overdue by this point, especially if it means adding new exclusive rewards.

Alternatively, introducing new Elements to Genshin Impact in the future could allow Elemental Oculi to remain a core part of the game. Even beyond the uncertain future of Oculi adventure items, Genshin Impact is seemingly building up to a point where introducing new Elements will eventually become crucial for new gameplay and plot developments after the Teyvat storyline concludes, so this could ultimately kill multiple birds with one stone. Ultimately, no matter which approaches Genshin Impact takes to addressing Oculi collectibles for future regions, it will surely be an interesting new chapter for the game.
