Ichigo Kurosaki faces enemies belonging to different races throughout the Bleach anime. One of them is the Quicies, who are the sworn enemies of the Soul Reapers. The animosity between both of these races has been in place for more than 1,000 years. Their past is bitter with tragedies and resentment on each side.
The Quincy King Yhwach wanted to change the very nature of the world where there wasn’t an abode for Quincies. He was in slumber for a long time and wages war against the Soul Reapers. Yhwach completely destroyed the Soul Society to further his goals. He can see into the future and since he can predict attacks easily, Yhwach is a tough opponent to be reckoned with.
Who Are The Quincies?
Quincy is a race who have a resentful rivalry with the Soul Reapers. They have been fighting wars with them since ancient times, and both parties have suffered multiple casualties. Unlike Soul Reapers, Quincies are Humans and dwell among the living.
Unlike Soul Reapers who cleansed Hollows, so they could move on as a soul to the afterlife. Quincies believe in the complete eradication of Hollows, and think that they do not deserve redemption due to the atrocities they commit.
Quincies use a variety of equipment such as the cross, which lets them take control of Reshi needed for their offensive abilities.
Quincies use spiritual power to conjure up bows, and they seem to be well-versed at attacking from long distances.
Other than bows, they are also sometimes seen using a sword or a sniper. The members of Sternritter seem to have various abilities depending on their aptitude, including teleportation, regeneration, and explosion.
There were two types of Quincies, namely the pure-bloods who were called Echts, and the Gemischt who were mixed breeds as many of them were married into Japanese families.
Why Were Quincies Eradicated?
The balance of souls between the three worlds, namely Hueco Mundo, Soul Society, and The Human World, was the key to sustaining them.
As Quincies were completely killing off Hollows, they risked the eradication of the worlds. Due to their aggressive approach, the rulers of Soul Society deemed it a necessity to have them removed.
Quincies also declined all attempts to negotiate when they were approached by Soul Reapers to let them handle Hollows only.
These events occurred about 200 years ago in Bleach. After the catastrophe, more discussions were held to find a common ground.
The Quincies proposed dealing with the Hollows on earth while not eradicating them, so the Soul Reapers can take care of them when they arrive. According to them, this will lessen the damage causes by Hollows.
However, this time the deal fell off due to the actions of Soul Reapers, as they refused to participate due to the resentment they felt over the loss of lives in the recent war. Despite everything, a few Quincies managed to survive in the human world, although their race became almost extinct.
Who Is Yhwach?
Major spoilers for Bleach: Thousand Year Blood war ahead, so read at discretion if you have not caught up with the anime.
Yhwach is the King of all Quincies, and he is also the source of all powers they possess. He can willingly take the powers he gave to them.
Apparently, he is the son of the Soul King, which explains his strength and control over Reshi. As his blood is a part of every Quincy, people have a hard time opposing him, as he can control their bodies.
He is one of the cruelest villains in the series, as shown when he quickly reduces the Soul Society into Rubble.
Yhwach was in a sleeping state after being defeated by Yamamoto; 1,000 years later, he returned and started a major war.
He hated the state of the worlds that his father created, so he wanted to destroy the three existing realms and unite them into a single world.
For this purpose, he killed the Soul King by using Ichigo’s body. His world would also acknowledge the existence of Quincies, a race which faced hardships due to Soul Society.
Yhwach has assigned various letters to his members of Sternritter. This allowed him to transfer a large amount of his power to his loyal followers.
He has assigned himself the letter A which denotes ‘The Almighty’. Yhwach possesses great power and this ability lets him see the future of the world. However, he seems to be unable to predict a few unexpected things.
