STALKER 2 Gives Disappointing Update on Potential PS5 Version

Summary

  • STALKER 2’s director confirms an exclusive focus on Xbox and PC versions for now.
  • The game’s popularity leads to profit for GSC Game World, with no mention of future PlayStation plans.
  • The dev team continues to focus on bug fixes and updates, hinting at ongoing maintenance work over potential PS5 release.

Dealing a blow to the chances of STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl receiving a PS5 port in the near future, director Ievgen Grygorovych has stated the Xbox and PC versions are the “only ones” being worked on by developer GSC Game World. STALKER 2 is one of Xbox’s major console exclusives of 2024 and is currently available only on Xbox Series X/S and PC.

Since releasing on November 20, STALKER 2 has hit the ground running, with its sales and player count soaring high within a short period of time. The significant demand for the post-apocalyptic FPS is also partly down to the prolonged wait for the game, which was originally announced way back in 2010. As a result of its popularity, just about a month after its launch, the STALKER sequel collected enough revenue to generate a profit for its creator, GSC Game World. Despite it being an Xbox console exclusive, certain players have been holding out for an eventual PS5 version announcement. However, such speculation may now have been put to bed, at least for the time being, by the Ukrainian studio.

Recently, Grygorovych gave a disappointing statement when asked about STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl‘s potential PS5 arrival in an interview with Tech4Gamers. Going with a brief and indirect answer, he said that GSC Game World has been “fully focused” on first developing and now supporting the PC and Xbox ports. When the source explicitly asked about the rumored three-month Xbox exclusivity for the horror game and its prospects for a PlayStation launch, the STALKER 2 lead emphasized the team’s policy of not talking about “leaks, rumors, or speculations.” Moreover, he reiterated that the game’s versions on its current platforms are the “only ones” being worked on by the developer.

STALKER 2 Developer Remains Tight-Lipped on a Possible PS5 Port

Evidently, the STALKER 2 director’s comments hint at his lack of interest in talking about the likelihood of the game making it onto PlayStation. This suggests that things with the latest STALKER title are being handled quite differently compared to another major Xbox console exclusive, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which was revealed to be coming to PS5 even before the Xbox and PC versions were out. Given that the move didn’t sit well with certain Xbox enthusiasts, there have been reports that the Microsoft-owned brand may have dialed down on making its big game releases multi-platform too soon.

Even if Grygorovych’s team isn’t developing a PS5 version at present, it is likely to have its hands full, owing to the maintenance work required due to the game’s bug-laden launch state. Since its release, GSC Game World has shipped hefty updates to optimize the experience for players, with a recent major update fixing nearly 2,000 technical issues in the new STALKER game. Based on the dev’s comments, it looks like more significant updates for the foreseeable future are the priority right now rather than any speculated PlayStation port.
