Movie Featuring Hatsune Miku Gets New Trailer

Movie Featuring Hatsune Miku Gets New Trailer

Summary

  • Miku struggles to have her voice and songs heard in “COLORFUL STAGE! The Movie.”
  • Vocaloid characters use synthesized voices while human characters are voiced by actors.
  • The movie is part of the Project Sekai franchise, with potentially more anime adaptations based on its success.

COLORFUL STAGE! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing has just received a new trailer! This is the first movie in the Project Sekai Colorful Stage franchise, and is set to debut in Japan on January 17, 2025. It was announced at the end of July, and a worldwide release has been confirmed, though more details about that are yet to be revealed. It seems Miku doesn’t just sing Pokémon songs in her free time.

As the title suggests, in the plot, no matter how hard she tries, Miku’s voice and songs can’t reach people. It seems that the script will take advantage of Vocaloid characters having synthesized voices (and therefore sound artificial when singing and speaking) to build an engaging plot.

PSA: Rhythm Game Fans Should Keep An Eye On Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage

Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage has come out of beta with a blossoming playerbase, thanks to features making rhythm games more accessible for everyone.

That’s clearer with the new trailer: Miku and other Vocaloid characters are clearly “voicing themselves” (they are using the Vocaloid software to give voice to these characters), while human characters are voiced by actors. If the plot follows this path, it will be fun because the message would be something like “yes, you can sing being a voice synthesizer software”. Check the trailer out:

Colorful Stage the Movie main staff

Studio P.A. Works (Buddy Daddys) is handling the animation for the movie. Hiroyuki Hata, who previously worked on some Yuru Yuri seasons/OVA, is directing the series.

Yoko Yonaiyama is in charge of the screenplay, and her portfolio includes series like Ya Boy Kongming! and Umamusume: Pretty Derby, which are highly praised despite being somewhat underrated. Satoshi Hono (Aggrestsuko) is composing the music.

The Project Sekai Franchise

Project Sekai is a rhythm game released in 2020 for iOS and Android devices in Japan, and launched globally in 2021. The game features a plot that starts similar to the movie, but instead of Miku somehow joining the real world, it’s Ichika who ends up transported to a new reality. The main cast (apart from the Vocaloid characters, who are voiced through the software) is returning to their original roles.

It’s likely that Cripton Media Future is planning more anime to expand the franchise, but that will probably depend on this movie’s performance in Japan and globally. They have been investing more in promoting Miku internationally, and have collaborated with several major franchises to achieve that goal, from the previously mentioned Pokémon to Fortnite. Well, maybe she’s now too busy perform at the Coachella once again.
