It’s hard to deny the similarities between Overwatch 2 and Marvel Rivals, as many of the characters from the two games share common mechanics in their kits. One of the most obvious comparisons can be made between Marvel Rivals‘ Doctor Strange and Overwatch 2‘s Symmetra since both can utilize a mechanic that instantly transports teammates from one part of the map to another. While this skill can be incredibly useful for getting the drop on opponents, it requires a delicate balancing act that gives both characters a high skill ceiling in their respective games.
Despite Doctor Strange playing the tanky Vanguard role in Marvel Rivals and Symmetra the DPS role in Overwatch 2, they both offer their teams a unique rollout opportunity thanks to their portal-creating skills. While these skills serve similar purposes, they differ in a few key ways that can change how teams play around them. However, they both have a major potential drawback that can ruin a team’s positioning if players misuse Doctor Strange or Symmetra’s abilities.

Portal and Teleporter Placement Has the Potential for Massive Payoff
Although it takes a moment to set up, Doctor Strange’s ability to place a portal almost anywhere on a map makes him a huge boon for any team in Marvel Rivals. Players can use Doctor Strange’s portal to set up behind unsuspecting enemy lines or set up a strategic rollout to ensure they can capture a point first. The potential a good Doctor Strange player has to support their team makes him one of the best Marvel Rivals characters in the current meta, and capable of pulling off some of the game’s most impressive plays.
Overwatch 2 players who made the jump to Marvel Rivals likely foresaw the potential of Doctor Strange’s portals after the way Symmetra’s teleporter has been used throughout the game’s life. Despite going through numerous changes over the years, Symmetra’s teleporter is still a great way to help teams reposition to their advantage, despite not having quite the same range that Doctor Strange’s portals do in Marvel Rivals. The advantage Symmetra’s teleporter does get is the speed at which it can be constructed along with its shorter cooldown, allowing for much faster teleportation of teammates with a far lower waiting period between uses.
Doctor Strange’s portal in Marvel Rivals has a 180-second cooldown, meaning players could be in for a long wait after a misuse of the skill. For comparison, Symmetra’s teleporter has a 12-second cooldown.
Misplaced Portals and Teleporters Can Lead to Frustration
Whether playing Doctor Strange in Marvel Rivals or Symmetra in Overwatch 2, players will need to be mindful of where they place their portal or teleporter. Since most players will not know where they are being teleported to, the Doctor Strange or Symmetra player will need to ensure they’ve set up a safe location for their teammates to exit, otherwise, the enemy team can easily counter Doctor Strange or Symmetra’s most useful skill. At least with Doctor Strange, players can see through the portal to the location they will be going to, a luxury Symmetra’s teleporter does not afford.
One of the biggest risks of playing on a Marvel Rivals or Overwatch 2 team with one of these characters is the potential for a Doctor Strange or Symmetra player to intentionally put a portal in a location that will put their teammates at great risk. Placing a portal or teleporter that drops players off of the map can be a sneaky way to wipe a team for players looking to cause mischief. As such, there is a fine line Doctor Strange and Symmetra players need to walk when using their portal and teleporter skills, and communication between teammates can go a long way toward setting up a winning strategy with these heroes.
