Every now and again, a game releases that you simply cannot put down. We’re not talking about the Final Fantasys or Elden Rings of the world, which you can’t put down until you beat them. We’re talking about games that you literally cannot put down.
For many gamers, during the 2020 pandemic, that game was Animal Crossing: New Horizons. People were obsessed with it. So much so that its total tally of lifetime sales sits at nearly 47 million, which is more than any of the Nintendo Switch Pokémon titles.
But at some point, life goes on. You may get a new job, find a new hobby or even a new obsession, and the game becomes useless to you. Taking to Reddit, thousands of gamers shared the games they sunk hours into, only to leave it all behind.

Playing These Games Became A Job
World of Warcraft was easily one of the top answers on the Reddit thread, with gamers sharing stories of the amount of time they put into the MMO RPG.
What made some of them quit? Well, actually getting a job. “I lost interest when I couldn’t play absurd amounts anymore,” one user revealed.
Another user had their significant other spell out just how much time WoW was taking. “One day, my wife walked up to me and handed me a spreadsheet,” they recalled. “It was the hours that I played World of Warcraft, for a month. I had been playing at least four hours per day, more on the weekends. I quit playing that day.”
Of course, how could we forget Destiny? A non-Halo title by Bungie set in space? Sign us all up. “Beat the Final Shape and felt like the story and journey was complete for me. Lost the urge to play within a month of that release. Have not booted it up since,” the original poster shared about their most-played game.
In a rather unique twist, one gamer revealed that the game they sunk tons of time into, only to quit in the end was For Honor. “Man, I forgot how much fun I had with that game early on,” another user recalled in response.
For this writer, MLB The Show, specifically 2020 and 2021, were incredulous time sinks. Each of those titles had over 500 hours played each before I realized that no progress carried over year-over-year. Since then, I haven’t played more than 15–20 hours in any of the later installments.
