It’s happened to all of us. We were making our way across Limgrave, still getting our bearings around Elden Ring, when, what we thought was a chest with some loot in it transported us to Caelid – pretty much hell in Elden Ring. It’s one of the best and scariest parts of the game, almost like a warning of what we’re eventually going to have to face.

We’ll have to wait and see what exactly Elden Ring Nightreign is, but it’s certainly not a straight-up sequel!
We’ve all fallen for the teleporting chest gag. But each of us has had varying experiences. Some of us died instantly against the first Caelid native we faced, others managed to retreat back to Limgrave without turning back, some poor souls lost tens of thousands of Runes thanks to that bloody chest.
Classic Elden Ring
It’s soon going to be three years now, but I’m sure you all remember what happened when you got duped by the teleporting chest. Over on the Elden Ring subreddit, one new player posted about falling for it, resulting in a wave of nostalgia-filled comments about players’ first experience of being transported from the starting region to arguably the most hostile region of The Lands Between.
“The warp chest to Caelid is a pretty classic moment for a first playthought,” explained one experienced player to the newcomer. “Either find a Grace and warp out, or run West until the sky stops being on fire.”
“Lost all of the runes I got from Flying Dragon Agheel [in] my first playthrough thanks to the Caelid teleport, then getting bodied by the bug guys because I used so many flasks fighting the dragon,” recalled one poor Tarnished. “Pissed off was an understatement”.
Another player felt like they were trapped in hell, saying, “I’m pretty sure getting out of that cave was the hardest thing I did throughout my entire first playthrough. Because I kept respawning in the little shack and trying to go every direction except toward the exit.”
“Game is working as intended. This teleporter chest is a cruel joke specifically for newer players. On release that trap was even more mean,” reminisced one pre-nerf player.
However, one of the shortest comments encapsulated this moment perfectly – “This is Miyazaki saying Merry Christmas!”
