Baldur's Gate 3 Players Didn't Know The Sponge Tray Was Reusable

Things can often get messy in Baldur’s Gate 3. I don’t mean choosing the wrong dialogue option or accidentally messing up your Honor Mode run. I’m talking about blasting a crew of goblins with a fireball and having their blood and guts splash onto you. Coupled by the fact that you’re mostly living in the wild, your party is bound to get a little dirty and smelly.

It’s not a live service game.

Sure, you can perform a long rest to clean yourself off before the next encounter, but who has the time for that when there are places to go and Illithid to kill? In another instance of Larian having an answer but not telling the players, it turns out that you can use a sponge tray to clean yourself off and remove any nasty smells.

You’ve Got To Look Good While Saving The World

Based on a Reddit post by TwistedCKR1, it turns out that a lot of Baldur’s Gate 3 players didn’t know that the Sponge Tray was a reusable item that would clean you up and remove any smell on you. I admit, I didn’t know this myself and spent many romance scenes with Lae’zel covered in blood. But I think she liked that.

A lot of the comments were surprised at this fact. Yes, the description of the sponge tray does mention you can do this, but I doubt many players even picked it up, let alone read its description. But, if they did, it would have saved them a lot of instances of their party being completely soaked in blood during cutscenes.

A neat little secret one of the comments pointed out is, “if you use it before entering the circus in act 3 the door ghoul will let you pass without questions as they detect no blood stink on you.” It’s these little details that make us love the game even more.

Sure, you can step into a water body or throw a bottle of water at yourself, but it’s pretty neat that Larian even thought of this as an option. It makes perfect sense if you think about it, though. The party mainly lives in the wild, so a sponge tray is going to be the best way they can clean themselves up. However, very few people realised that the devs would be so detail-oriented.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is the long-awaited next chapter in the Dungeons & Dragons-based series of RPGs. Developed by Divinity creator Larian Studios, it puts you in the middle of a mind flayer invasion of Faerûn, over a century after the events of its predecessor.
