Mass Effect Datamine Unearths Paragon And Renegade Sprint Animations

There are plenty of games where the decisions you make dictate where you fall on a morality scale. There are perhaps none more famous, however, than the Mass Effect trilogy. A three-game playthrough, what happens during most of which is dictated by the decisions you make, and it seems BioWare had other plans for what your decisions would change about the game that were never implemented.

Since the first Mass Effect game is 17 years old, and the series’ fanbase has gone through the original three games with a fine toothcomb more times than you could imagine, it’s not often unknown information about the trilogy is unearthed. Orikon has managed to do exactly that though and shared their findings on Twitter, discovering even Shepard’s sprint was going to be affected by your Mass Effect decision making.

Known as masseffect_peom on Twitter, the Mass Effect fan has shared what they discovered in the game’s files. Unused sprint animations for Shepard, the names of which suggest they were going to be used depending on the path players took. Shepard would have had a faster, more upright sprint had players taken the paragon path, whereas a renegade Shepard would have been hunched over, running head-first at enemies, or away from them.

Renegades Running Like Husks, Figures

Fellow Mass Effect fans have pointed out that Shepard’s unused renegade sprint is very similar to the way Husks run in the games. Husks are effectively Mass Effect’s take on zombies and what many killed by the Reaper invasion eventually become. Interesting that there was a point in the trilogy’s development that BioWare considered making Shepard’s sprint mimic that of what they were fighting against had a player taken the Renegade path.

No one who worked on the games has commented on the discovery of the paragon/renegade sprint animations to comment on why exactly they wound up not making it into the game. It’s entirely possible their creation took up such a small period during the development time that most of the devs don’t even know they exist. That would help explain why these files have remained undiscovered for so long.

Now Dragon Age: The Veilguard has been released, most of the team at BioWare is presumably working on the next Mass Effect game. There have been teasers for what’s to come, but very little about what’s next in the series is known at present. The next game is likely still a long way off too. With a five-year gap between Anthem and The Veilguard, it wouldn’t surprise me if we’re not playing new Mass Effect until 2029.
