James Gunn gave an update about the future of The Flash in the DC Universe. It appears that they do not have an immediate plan to bring back the Scarlet Speedster on the big screen.

The Flash is one of the most popular superheroes in the DC comics. When Gunn and Peter Safran took over the DC Studios as co-chairman and co-CEO, they decided to reboot the series and movies from the DCEU. Many are wondering what their plans for The Flash are since the last film starring Ezra Miller underperformed at the box office. Gunn shared his thoughts about the future of The Flash. Apparently, they have plans for Barry Allen in the DCU. However, they are not in a rush to feature him.

James Gunn explained the sight of a bleeding Superman at the beginning of the new trailer.

Gunn and Safran are definitely bringing the Fastest Man Alive into their re-invented DCU. Gunn confirmed this when a fan asked about the next DCU film on social media. Gunn made it clear that they had no script for it yet, so it wasn’t “greenlit.” The fan was wondering if Clayface was the official third movie from DCU after Superman (July 11, 2025) and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (June 26, 2026). The same online user asked why Gunn did not pick a more popular character like The Flash or Wonder Woman. Earlier this month, it was announced that Clayface would premiere on September 11, 2026. “Because of the number one rule here at DC: No movie will be greenlit before the script is ready,” Gunn explained on Thread. “And @flanaganfilm’s script was ready. (And as for the Flash we’re holding a beat on development).”

Many were not surprised by Gunn’s revelation. In fact, they believed it would take years before DCU would invest in another The Flash solo film. The last movie was among the worst flops in Warner Bros.’ history, suggesting that they might not invest in another one anytime soon. Some speculated that they might feature The Flash but will not give the superhero a solo film. This makes sense if Gunn will work on Justice League because it’s hard to imagine the group without The Flash. However, Gunn said earlier in December 2024 that they were not working on Justice League yet while talking about Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. “Yeah, they’re light canon. Peacemaker is pretty straightforward, with the exception of the appearance by a certain group [the former DCEU’s Justice League] at the end. (Laughs.) They don’t exist yet,” Gunn told The Hollywood Reporter. But the rule is: If we mention [something from the past] in one of the new DCU shows [and movies], then it happened. So that’s the way we’re dealing with it.”

With Gunn avoiding mentioning any project with a direct relation to The Flash, it’s likely that fans will have to wait years to see the superhero again. Also, Gunn and Safran not prioritizing The Flash is understandable. Their Chapter One: Gods and Monster slate includes movies like Superman: Legacy and The Authority, and TV series like Creature Commandos. The Flash is not part of it. Another possible reason is how the recent movie underperformed at the box office due to the controversial lead. Miller was plagued with legal and personal issues. There were even calls to cancel the film. Warner Bros. pushed it and its performance was not really surprising because of Miller’s scandal. Some even called to boycott the project, which could be among the reasons of its underwhelming performance.

The Flash streams on Netflix.
