Some One Piece characters, despite being beloved by the community, haven’t done much to affect the story so far. Fan-favorite characters like Shanks, Dragon, and even Akainu, often lurk in the shadows, planning every move with ruthless efficiency and patiently waiting for their next appearance. For many One Piece fans, this makes for an interesting and mysterious character that will change the story when they first appear. In many ways, fans are putting stock in characters that haven’t done much so far but will do something big when they appear.

Despite holding such an important position, Dragon has not been a major player in the story so far, only crossing paths with Luffy once.

As it turns out, the last time Dragon helped Luffy in Loguetown was in 1999, around 25 real-world years ago. Outside of this, the only times Dragon is shown on screen after that is for brief reactions and small conversations about the current state of the world.

Despite being a bit too early to tell, the slow-cooking first major Dragon’s appearance may make for one of the greatest character moments the series has seen thus far.

Firstly, in One Piece, it makes sense that Dragon has yet to make a move throughout the entire series. Although the Revolutionaries are powerful, they are nowhere near strong enough to take on the One Piece World Government head-to-head. However, Dragon has been patiently waiting for his forces to grow stronger, and other outside factors, like Luffy and his crew, to weaken the World Government as well. Dragon is an extremely intelligent and patient character. It’s completely understandable that the Head of the Revolutionary Army won’t make a move until he’s sure he can win.

From a writing perspective, although it can make the character seem boring, the slow build-up to revealing Dragon’s true power in the series has actually made him one of the most anticipated characters so far. With so much fan speculation discussing his abilities and origins, it’s interesting to see how much fans want to see a character that has only had a handful of lines. Though the buildup may have gone on for a little bit too long, seeing Dragon make his move is going to be one of the best moments of One Piece, because of how long fans had to wait for it.

Within the next few years, all the burning questions about Dragon will finally be answered.
