It’s, therefore, time to reflect on all of Rukia’s major bouts in Bleach to understand what makes each of them so special in the eyes of many fans — and which ones rank the best in terms of style and memorability.

This list will only focus on Rukia’s major battles, along with the ones where she at least begins the fight on her own. While she has had a few other skirmishes that are much shorter, such as her confrontation with Grimmjow, or part of a cooperative effort, these will not be considered.

Rukia VS Shrieker

An Early Series Fight That Sees Rukia Take On A Frightening Hollow

Shrieker is a menacing Hollow that stumbles upon Rukia during the first few episodes of the show. Since Rukia is still in recovery mode at this point, she is unable to use the full extent of her powers, so instead, she shows off her acrobatic abilities by avoiding Shrieker’s swipe attacks with backflips and handstands.

This level of mobility would never really be seen from Rukia again in the series, making this a pretty intriguing fight to watch. Despite Rukia struggling in this battle, it still stands as an intense duel that pushes her to her absolute limits while in her weaker form.

Rukia VS Di Roy Rinker

Rukia Reveals The Chilling Capabilities Of Her Zanpakuto Against D-Roy

This unexpected skirmish takes place near the beginning of the Arrancar arc when Aizen’s forces start creeping into the world of the living. After hurling himself at Rukia, the incredibly smug and cocky Di Roy tries to mock the Soul Reaper for her lack of strength as he manages to go toe-to-toe with her on foot.

Bleach: Aizen’s 8 Best Fights, Ranked

Aizen is one of Bleach’s most central characters, and these are some of the most iconic fights he has participated in.

After Rukia freezes the ground, D-Roy takes to the skies, acting as if he’s already won the battle, only for Rukia to explain even those in midair can be affected by her Zanpakuto’s elemental abilities, freezing Di Roy solid not long after. This fight may have been short, but it provided a small glimpse into Rukia’s true capabilities, and a subtle bit of foreshadowing for her Bankai which would arrive much later down the line.

Rukia VS Rudbornn

The Imposing Espada Rudbornn Tests Rukia’s Durability By Throwing A Horde Of Soldiers Her Way

  • Episodes: 215, 226, 269, 272

After Rudbornn tries his best to stall Ichigo from rescuing Orihime in the Arrancar arc, Rukia comes to the rescue to help fend off the skeletal-looking Espada herself. This fight goes into high gear once Rudbornn reveals his Resurreccion ability to sprout tree branches that he can then use to ‘grow’ new soldiers, after Rukia has already taken down an entire horde of them.

However, Rukia remains calm and composed as she proceeds to freeze each of the branches with her Zanpakuto, rendering Rudbornn completely useless. This fight serves as a reminder that, despite how strong many of the enemies are in Bleach, Rukia’s unique ability to summon ice can take out many of them in mere seconds, showing just how strong this Soul Reaper really is.

3

Rukia VS Riruka

A Comedic Fight That Also References One Of Rukia’s Most Iconic Character Quirks

  • Episodes: 362, 363, 364, 365

Rukia’s confrontation with Fullbringer Riruka is a rather unusual fight, to say the least, but despite how whacky and weird it may be, it still manages to feed into Rukia’s character. Not long after the battle begins, Riruka attempts to throw giant stuffed animals at Rukia, exposing the Soul Reaper’s weakness of losing her composure whenever confronted with anything even remotely cute.

Bleach: 8 Best Kenpachi Fights, Ranked

The monster of the Gotei 13, Zaraki Kenpachi, has been involved in some of Bleach’s most epic fights.

However, after coming back to her senses, Rukia then manages to fend off Riruka’s attacks with her ice attacks, and even uses Flash Step when she is suddenly turned into a puppet. Rukia’s love for cute and cuddly animals isn’t a character quirk that anyone could have expected to show up in a fight, but it led to one of the funniest battles in the entire series.

Rukia VS Aaroniero

Rukia Comes To Realize The Importance Of Memories In This Grueling Battle

  • Episodes: 153, 154, 155, 159, 160

After Ichigo and the gang split up to search Hueco Mundo for Orihime’s whereabouts, it’s Rukia who gets the unlucky privilege of encountering the Espada first — more specifically, Aaroniero. He possesses the ability to morph into people that he’s absorbed and killed, and for this fight, he transforms into Kaien, Rukia’s late friend, to try and play mind games on her.

As a result, Rukia goes through mental torture for much of this fight, being conflicted on whether she should be attacking someone who looks exactly like the person she once cherished so dearly. However, after a grueling battle that almost cost Rukia her own life, she comes to learn that it’s the memories of the person that matter most, not the desire to see them return to life, which allows her to barely seize the victory.

Rukia VS As Nodt

As Nodt Pushes Rukia To Her Absolute Limit, Prompting Her To Unleash Her Ultimate Ability

Rukia’s battle with As Nodt is one of the most memorable of the Thousand Year Blood War arc, primarily because there’s just so much packed into it. The beginning of the battle, which sees As Nodt trying to invoke fear into Rukia, who has literally frozen herself to death temporarily, is an intriguing battle of the minds that quickly ramps up to another level once As Nodt manages to get into Rukia’s head.

Seeing Rukia utterly defenseless as she becomes paralyzed with fear, along with all the disturbing imagery that accompanies it, makes for a genuinely intense sequence. However, after a pep talk from Byakuya, Rukia ends the life of her terrifying opponent once and for all by unleashing her long-awaited Bankai, Hakka no Togame, which is the cherry on top of an already outstanding battle.
