6 Best Trainer Cards From Mythical Island In Pokemon TCG Pocket

6 Best Trainer Cards From Mythical Island In Pokemon TCG Pocket

There was a limited pool of trainer cards available at the launch of Pokemon Pocket. Staples like Pokeball, Professor Oak, and Sabrina were no-brainers, but beyond that, many cards felt lackluster and served as filler in most decks until better options appeared. With the launch of Mythical Island, there is a robust pool of trainers, requiring players to be more selective with the limited deck count of 20.

Only one-third of Mythical Island’s trainer cards fit into any deck, while the rest are tailored to combos, types, or specific Pokemon. However, most of these trainers are highly impactful. The addition of two high-quality supporters has made the ‘one supporter per turn’ rule a significant factor in players’ decision-making.

Old Amber

Trainer Type

Item

Works Well With

Aerodactyl, Aerodactyl ex

The only trainer card that also exists in Genetic Apex is Old Amber. Old Amber serves as a makeshift basic Pokemon that evolves into Aerodactyl and the brand-new Aerodactyl ex. It has some clever plays, such as placing it in the active zone and then discarding it for something better—avoiding the waste of energy or points to switch Pokemon.

The introduction of Aerodactyl ex has significantly increased the value of Old Amber. Aerodactyl ex can prevent your opponent from evolving their active Pokemon. While its 80 damage often knocks out most basics and Stage 1 Pokemon before they can evolve, it shines in niche situations where it can target Charmeleon, Wartortle, or Mythical Island Pidgeotto. However, players can counter Aerodactyl ex’s effect by evolving benched Pokemon and then switching them in, which positions Aerodactyl more as a powerful fighter than a strict evolution disruptor.

Pokemon Flute

Trainer Type

Item

Works Well With

Pidgeot ex, Pidgeot, Sabrina

The most difficult trainer to use in Mythical Island is Pokemon Flute. Pokemon Flute was clearly designed to complement Pidgeot ex, which becomes stronger as its opponent’s bench fills with more monsters. Placing a discarded monster onto your opponent’s bench can be useful in other ways, such as wasting bench space for them in certain situations, but it can also synergize well with Sabrina. Any card that affects your opponent’s bench is quite useful, even if it is niche.

Since Pokemon Flute is an item and not a supporter, it can be combined with Sabrina to set up a game-winning move instead of battling your opponent’s powerful active Pokemon. You can also disrupt their strategy by bringing back a high-retreat-cost monster like Kangaskhan and switching it to the active spot, buying time to build up energy. If your Pokemon is strong enough to one-shot basic ex cards, you could potentially take out a discarded Mew ex or Pikachu ex to score two points.

4

Blue

The Pokemon Pocket card Blue by Ryuta Fuse.

Trainer Type

Supporter

Works Well With

Arcanine ex, Mewtwo ex

The Viridian City gym leader in Pokemon Silver, Gold, and Crystal has an effect opposite to the Viridian City gym leader in Red, Blue, and Yellow. Blue provides your Pokemon with ten points of defense, directly countering Giovanni ten points of attack. This boost allows Blue to address critical matchup issues, such as Pikachu ex surviving an attack from Arcanine ex or Melmetal withstanding a hit from Mewtwo ex.

Some might argue that Blue is a less versatile defensive option compared to potions, which can heal more damage overall. However, much of Pokemon Pocket revolves around achieving precise one-hit or two-hit KOs. Blue’s ability to let your Pokemon survive one extra round and return fire can often be the deciding factor in winning battles.

3

Budding Expeditioner

Budding Expeditioner from Pokemon Pocket.

Trainer Type

Supporter

Works Well With

Mew ex

This card works similarly to Koga, serving as a phenomenal way to stall for time, which seems to be Mew ex’s primary purpose in the current meta. For Mewtwo ex decks that have been using the standard Mewtwo as a stall card, Mew ex is an upgrade due to its higher HP and ability to deal poke damage with just one psychic energy.

Budding Expeditioner returns Mew to your hand, allowing you to re-summon it to the bench and effectively fully heal all damage and alignments. This makes Budding Expeditioner an excellent tool for stalling and can also fit into other stall decks, such as Dragonite, which has traditionally relied on Weezing and Koga. If Mew ex’s best pairing is with Mewtwo ex, the only downside is finding space for Budding Expeditioner, as Mewtwo ex decks already include numerous staples like the Gardevoir line.

2

Mythical Slab

The Pokemon Pocket card Mythical Slab by Ayumi Odashima.

Trainer Type

Item

Works Well With

Mewtwo ex, Gengar ex, Alakazam, Sigilyph

As if Mewtwo ex needed any more help, Mythical Slab is a low-risk deck mill card. Mythical Slab helps you get one step closer to a key monster, primarily Gardevoir. The biggest issue with Mewtwo ex is its speed, as it requires not only Mewtwo ex itself but also completing a full evolutionary line to provide consistent energy. In conjunction with Sigilyph, Mythical Slabs ability to mill through your deck fast is a big boost to underrated decks such as Gengar ex and Alakazam as well.

Pokemon Pocket: 10 Best Cards From Mythical Island

You’ll want to get your hands on plenty of these cards, the best to come out of Pokemon Pocket’s Mystical Island expansion.

The downside of Mythical Slab is that if you don’t draw a psychic Pokemon, the card goes to the bottom of your deck. However, since your deck doesn’t shuffle afterward, you still effectively mill your deck closer to a key Pokemon and gain knowledge of which card you won’t have access to. That said, it’s less ideal if you send a card like Professor Oak to the bottom of your deck. It’s likely smarter to hold onto Mythical Slab until you’ve played some of your key trainers.

1

Leaf

The Pokemon Pocket card Leaf by En Morikura..

Trainer Type

Supporter

Works Well With

Arcanine ex, Charizard ex, Articuno ex, Moltres ex, Mewtwo ex

Pokemon with two- and three-star retreat costs were major liabilities during Genetic Apex. Even having a monster with a high retreat cost on your bench with no energy could leave it vulnerable to Sabrina. Leaf now provides the flexibility to make better tactical switches.

Leaf is a significant boost for two-star retreat monsters like Articuno and Moltres. Pokemon like Kangaskhan, which are tanky and deal good damage but have high retreat costs, have become more viable. Leaf is a supporter card, so it can’t be combined with other trainer cards like X-Speed in the same turn. As a result, you’re likely to keep both in your deck, but Leaf is probably the most flexible supporter card in Pokemon Pocket.
