The manga behind the historical anime, Vinland Saga, is reportedly reaching its conclusion. The mangaka Makoto Yukimura has posted on his X (formerly Twitter) page about the future of the manga, and his struggles with working on it and getting to the conclusion. A canon ending to the manga coming before the anime is complete is also a good sign for the future of the anime, which will be able to continue to follow the acts of the manga.
Yukimura’s original post was translated by X user sandman_AP, who posted the message on Friday morning. In just a few hours after publishing, the post had over 20,000 views and almost 500 likes, showing that fans are engaging heavily with the information. The ending to Vinland Saga may be just around the corner.

The End of Vinland Saga
A Challenge to Complete
According to the translation by sandman_AP, Makoto Yukimura wrote,
The serialization of Vinland Saga is nearing its conclusion. While you might think I’m complaining, especially since I’ve taken a break this month, wrapping up a story is an incredibly difficult task.
When I reflect on it, I’ve only drawn one final chapter before, so this will be my second time, with Vinland Saga. I truly admire mangaka who have successfully completed long-running series, and that fact alone is enough for me to hold them in high regard.
My goal is to create an ending that leaves every reader thinking, ‘I’m glad I read this,’ though I realize that it’s impossible to create an ending that pleases everyone. After all, everyone has their own preferences. Nevertheless, I will do my utmost to carefully consider and work toward an ending that suits this story.
It seems from Yukimura’s own words that reaching the end of Vinland Saga has definitely been a challenge. That comes as no surprise, considering how popular the anime – and thus manga – have become in recent years. With lots of fans waiting to see what happens at the end of the story, the pressure is undeniably on Yukimura to write a conclusion that satisfies as many people as possible. Thankfully, he does seem to recognize that no matter what he does, there will always be those who are unhappy.
It is important to note that Yukimura does not give any time frame in his post. Vinland Saga may be reaching its ending, but that likely means it is entering its final arc, not its final chapter. There are likely still many chapters to come as the story ties up all its loose ends and finds a conclusion that, as Yukimura said, “suits the story.” While there is still Vinland Saga to come, the ending is in sight.

Vinland Saga So Far
An Epic Journey about Epic Journeys
Vinland Saga was first published by Makoto Yukimura in 2005, making the series nearly twenty years old now. Understanding that context makes it even more impressive that the long-running manga is finally in its final stages. It also makes Yukimura’s difficulties in writing the right ending more understandable, considering he has spent the last twenty years on the project. Currently, there are 28 volumes in the manga series. Vinland Saga was also adapted into an anime that ran from 2019-2023.
Vinland Saga is a historical story that follows the journey of Thorfinn, a Viking inspired by the King of Norway Olaf Tryggvason. It begins its tale in 1013 AD, and follows Thorfinn on an incredible journey to find the utopia of Vinland where everyone can live peacefully – even as war burns the world around him. At the same time, the story also follows that of King Canute’s rise to power, which is the direct opposite journey to the one that Thorfinn takes.
When many manga become anime before the manga is complete, two possible things happen. Either the manga becomes pressured to keep up with the anime’s release, which can result in added stress or a drop in quality, or the anime passes up the manga and has to make its own ending. With the manga for Vinland Saga reaching its ending, any subsequent seasons of the anime will not have to risk either of those things happening. The characters can have the ending they need, and the anime can portray the same.
