Sonic the Hedgehog 3 does not waste any time to get the ball rolling. It opens in Japan where Shadow is being held. He breaks out, causes some distractions, and then Team Sonic is called in to save the day in Japan. The trouble is, Shadow is more than a match for them.

The Lack Of Security In Japan
We Need More Guys
The movie opens with Shadow being held in a man-made facility floating in the middle of the Japanese sea. Eventually, Shadow wakes up and starts fighting about a dozen soldiers. One of the men watching says they need more guys but his subordinate says that was it. That’s a bit odd since Shadow is known to harbor Chaos Energy which is the equivalent of a nuclear device. How could one facility only prepare about a dozen guys to take him out? Also, it’s not clear why, after fifty years, that Shadow finally wakes up.
It’s Hammer Time!
That was the beginning of the movie, but the bookend saw two huge characters appear. First, Sonic is attacked by one Metal Sonic and then about a dozen more appear out of the haunting fog. That’s when Amy also appears to bash them apart with her hammer.

The Sonic franchise has seen both serious and comical rivalries over the years, with these being among the very best.
Metal Sonic first appeared in Sonic CD along with Amy as far as the games go. For the Sonic film universe, who made these Metal Sonics, and where did Amy come from?

Where Did Shadow Come From?
Is He Still Alive?
Shadow crash-landed on Earth fifty years ago on a meteorite. He doesn’t know where he came from or why he was on that meteorite. Since he is a hedgehog, viewers could think he came from the Green Hill Zone like Sonic in the movie franchise but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Amy and Shadow could come from the same area. In the games, Shadow is created by Professor Robotnik, Dr. Robotnik’s grandpa. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 definitely plays around with his origins, so anything is possible for Shadow and Amy in the next film.

What Led To Maria Dying?
Was Gerald Hiding Something
In a later flashback, Gerald, Dr. Robotnik’s grandpa, can be seen leading Maria and Shadow out of the facility. He tells them G.U.N. wants to cancel the Shadow project and take Shadow away for good. This leads to an explosion and the death of Maria. What’s unclear is why G.U.N. wants to shut the Shadow project down or if Gerald is even telling the truth. Gerald does show his true colors later as a villain so there could be a missing piece to the puzzle like Gerald was pushing too hard for more power and G.U.N. wanted to stop his madness. He could have been innocent and turned evil too.

Where Are The Rest Of The Robotniks?
And Did Ivo Survive?
Because Dr. Robotnik looks like his grandpa so much, fans could have imagined he was actually a clone. Gerald doesn’t go into their family history at all like who Dr. Robotnik’s parents were either which is suspicious. Was Maria his sister that he forgot or did Gerald have two kids who created two different grandchildren? One could have bore Maria while the other could have produced Ivo aka Dr. Robotnik. It’s also unclear if Dr. Robotnik survived, but since Shadow escaped, it’s almost certain he helped save Dr. Robotnik too.

Who Is Director Rockwell?
And The Keycard Mystery
One of the bigger new characters in the movie was Director Rockwell. She was a member of G.U.N. who was seemingly under Commander Walters and assumed control after he died. She’s played by Krysten Ritter, who Marvel fans may know as the titular Jessica Jones from that Netflix show.

Sonic The Hedgehog: 6 Laziest Characters
These Sonic characters aren’t exactly in a rush when it comes to saving the world or capturing the Blue Blur and would prefer to nap than go fast.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 makes it seem like Commander Walters doesn’t trust her or G.U.N. as if she was going to be tied to Gerald and Shadow. It turned out that Director Rockwell was on the up and up though, so why did Commander Walters entrust the keycard to Sonic instead of his agency? Shady dealings aside, Director Rockwell also wasn’t given enough time to become a true character in the film as her backstory and purpose leave a lot to be desired. Will she return?

Knuckles Leaving The Master Emerald With Wade
What Was He Thinking?
Knuckles can be said to be all muscle and no brain as he often talks with his fists. He does have a lot of heart though and trusts his friends implicitly even though sometimes he shouldn’t. For example, he left the Master Emerald with Wade as if he could protect it from anyone who tried to get ahold of it. Wade can humorously be seen playing hockey with it in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which should have created some sort of chaotic event. Wouldn’t slapping the Master Emerald activate it or maybe it only reacts to Sonic’s animal race of beings? Also, why would Knuckles leave it with a human at all even if Wade is a standup guy? The Master Emerald is basically another nuke just like Shadow.
