Daima Reveals The True History of the Multiverse

One of the best and most beloved parts about Dragon Ball Super was the fact that this entry in the franchise really expanded upon the universe of the series. By introducing Beerus and Whis, the concept of Gods of Destruction and Angels was introduced, which was then explained further with regard to the multiverse, of which there are 12 in total, each ruled by their own God of Destruction with an Angel attendant.

However, episode 10 of Dragon Ball Daima revealed new information about the concept of the multiverse in the franchise. Here, many previously unknown and established things about the creation of everything were challenged, as beings who were incredibly old and incomprehensibly powerful were teased for the first time. So, let’s go over the new state of the Dragon Ball multiverse and see how it differs from what fans previously thought.

What Was Previously Believed

The Concept of the Multiverse Before Daima

Although the concept of the multiverse was first shown in Super and was expanded upon as well, next to nothing was told about its history or how it came to be. In total, there are currently 12 separate universes, each ruled by its own Supreme Kais and Gods of Destruction, and are numbered as such. The surviving universes existed in pairs, with the total number of these pairs forming the number 13, i.e. Universes 1 and 12, 6 and 7, 3 and 10, and so on.

The entirety of the multiverse is ruled over by Grand Zeno, a being of unlimited destructive power that can erase entire universes with very little effort. Known as the Omni-King, Zeno was introduced as the highest authority in existence, though his personality is very childlike and innocent, which is why Goku was able to become friends with him. As befitting his power, Zeno is generally indifferent to life as he can destroy entire timelines easily.

In the far distant past, there were originally 18 universes in total. However, Zeno erased 5 of them due to being angry at having to keep track of so many and the fact that these few had very low Mortal Levels. Although Zeno planned on purging the weakest of the remaining universes as well, the Tournament of Power was held instead, where each of them was given a fighting chance to survive.

As for the individual universes, they are governed by the Supreme Kais and the God of Destruction, who are responsible for creating life and exterminating it to further the development of the universe respectively. Each Destroyer God is accompanied by an Angel attendant who acts as their teacher and is tasked with making sure they do their job adequately. So, in the case of the multiverse, Zeno was the highest authority imaginable.

What Changed In Daima?

The New Changes to the History of the Multiverse

The first of the biggest reveals from Daima came with the fact that the Demon Realm is incredibly ancient. So ancient in fact that it predates the entirety of the multiverse, as it was explained that this realm existed long before anything else outside of it. While it remains a mystery just how old it actually is, it can be traced back as the primary source of everything that came later.

Long ago, there was a Supreme Demon King who was generally thought of as being a benevolent ruler. Though his true name is never revealed, he was just known as the ‘good’ Supreme Demon King, and he sought to expand the borders of the Demon Realm. To do this, he created a being known as Majin Rymus, giving it the power to create the multiverse outside of their home realm and ruling over it as the ultimate authority.

Rymus then created the multiverse so that many of the residents of the Demon Realm could move out from there, which is how the Namekians got to Universes 6 and 7. Furthermore, to keep watch over the happenings of each universe, Rymus selected members of the Glind race to rule over the mortals of their universe, who were known as the Supreme Kais. However, after the rule of the good Supreme Demon King ended, an eventual successor limited the passage to and from the Demon Realm.

This reveal doesn’t contradict the established lore of the series, it just adds more of a foundation to build upon in the future. Many have even spoken about Rymus’ likeness to Zeno, suggesting that he may serve the ‘Kai’ role at the highest level in the multiverse, with Zeno of the God of Destruction and the Grand Priest as the Angel attendant, while others believe that Zeno may even be an impostor posing as the ultimate authority. So, as the lore of the multiverse increases, so do the possibilities for where the series could go in the future, greatly adding to the world building of Dragon Ball.
