Summary
- Baldur’s Gate 3 has jumped back into the top ten on the Steam sales chart.
- The game also maintains an impressive average player count for a single-player game.
- Mods should ensure the future of the game is secure.
Baldur’s Gate 3 has demonstrated an unparalleled level of longevity since its release last August. Not only has the game consistently maintained tens of thousands of daily players, but Baldur’s Gate 3 has also now returned to the top of Steam’s sales charts.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is a single-player game with no expansions that has maintained a higher average player count than many live-service games. Despite only receiving a 20 per cent discount in Steam’s winter sale, Baldur’s Gate 3 has jumped from 46 to 9 on SteamDB’s weekly sales chart. Elden Ring has seen a similar bounce-back, jumping from 54 to 7 with a 40 per cent discount.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Is Still Going Strong
It’s hard to believe that there are still people interested in playing Baldur’s Gate 3 that haven’t, but clearly, there are enough potential fans out there to cause a second holiday surge for Larian’s critically-acclaimed RPG. People generally have more time to play games over the holiday season, so if they missed the boat on Baldur’s Gate 3 last year they may see this time of year as an ideal period to dive into a 100-hour RPG.
Although there are no plans for any Baldur’s Gate 3 expansions, Larian has continuously updated the game throughout 2024. There have been 7 major patches, adding new endings, an epilogue sequence, additional dialogue and more. The studio isn’t finished yet, either. Next year’s eighth (and final?) patch will add new subclasses, crossplay and photo mode.
Baldur’s Gate 3 also has a budding modding community which will likely sustain the game for years to come. Larian released an official modding toolkit earlier this year and modders have taken full advantage, creating new classes and other additions that don’t require significant amounts of scripting. We’re also beginning to see what teams of modders can script given enough time and resources, so hopefully, we’ll see robust fan-made expansions in the coming years.
Larian announced it wouldn’t be creating expansions for Baldur’s Gate 3 shortly after the game’s release. The Dungeons & Dragons license is owned by Hasbro, and Larian would prefer to move on to more of its wholly-owned projects. The studio is currently working on two unknown games.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is the long-awaited next chapter in the Dungeons & Dragons-based series of RPGs. Developed by Divinity creator Larian Studios, it puts you in the middle of a mind flayer invasion of Faerûn, over a century after the events of its predecessor.
