Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is in cinemas now and has had quite the opening weekend, making almost twice as much as Mufasa at the domestic box office and earning back more than half its budget already. As much of a hit as it has been so far, Sonic fans do still have some questions about it, chief among them being how Gerald Robotnik is still alive, and so active, despite being more than 100 years old.
Gerald Robotnik is intrinsic to Shadow’s story so with Jeff Fowler directing the movie in which the black and red hedgehog would be introduced, Gerald was always going to be a part of it. The thing is, in the games, Gerald has died by the time Shadow returns. Despite 50 years having passed, and Gerald being 110 years old during the events of Sonic 3, Dr. Eggman’s dad is still alive and kicking.

All it was missing was a remaster of Shadow the Hedgehog!
If that’s a plot point you’ve been agonizing over since seeing the movie, Fowler has revealed there’s a deleted scene out there somewhere explaining how exactly Gerald is so spritely at the ripe old age of 110. Speaking with Comic Book, the Sonic trilogy’s director revealed Shadow’s chaos energy is the key to Gerald looking basically the same age for half a century, and seemingly what has kept him alive.
There’s [deleted] scenes where we’re seeing him take little hits off a Shadow quill the same way that Robotnik takes hits off Sonic’s quill. The idea was that chaos energy was having a revitalizing effect and that energy was keeping him alive.
Gerald Robotnik Is Using Chaos Energy To Stay Young
Does That Mean Sonic And Shadow Are Immortal?
When Gerald is carted off to prison following the lab explosion in the early 1970s, you can see the villain has one of Shadow’s quills clasped in his handcuffed fists. It’s unclear how he manages to sneak the chaos energy-charged quill into jail, and then how he keeps it hidden for half a century, but probably best not to think about that too much. Maybe the deleted scene will be released in due course and explain that too.
Fowler’s work with the Sonic movies has been key to their ongoing success. The director already noted during the third movie’s release weekend that he knew the iconic Sonic Adventure track Live And Learn would need to be a part of a film introducing Shadow. It might have been a brief cameo from the song, but it was in there and used for a very special moment in the movie.
