Inside Out 3 Should Utilize This Previously Scrapped Idea

Summary

  • Pixar scrapped the idea of Procrastination Land for previous Inside Out movies.
  • The idea could be revisited for Inside Out 3, with potential for character growth and humor.
  • Each emotion could react uniquely to Procrastination Land, making it a valuable addition to the franchise.

Pixar constantly creates ideas for its movies, often bringing a wide range of possibilities to the forefront before ultimately making decisions. However, there are times when great possibilities are left on the cutting room floor due to timing or because they don’t quite fit what is being done, as has been the case with the Inside Out franchise.

After two hit movies, it’s clear that Pixar has a great grip on the world and how it can work. However, there have been plenty of interesting ideas, from locations to characters, that Pixar opted not to use for the past two Inside Out movies. But a good idea never goes to waste by Pixar, and that’s why one particular scrapped idea could be tapped into for a potential Inside Out 3 movie.

What Was The Idea?

Joy, Anger, Sadness, Disgust and Fear in Inside Out

One of the big ideas that Pixar opted not to use was an area called Procrastination Land, which had been discussed previously but ultimately wasn’t used. Inside Out 2 director Kelsey Mann explained to ComicBook.com about the idea by saying, “One of my favorites is a location that we came up with called Procrastination Land. This is the land I definitely have, especially as a teen. It was a land which had a big sign that said ‘Procrastination Land,’ and then it said ‘Coming Soon.’ And Anger was like, ‘When are they gonna start building that place?! It just keeps sitting there!’ They haven’t made any movement on it. It’s such a funny idea. We had trouble figuring out why in this particular story. I won’t tell you everything about it, there’s some other stuff about it that’s really funny. So, I’m like, ‘This has to be used somehow in the future.'”

The idea is one that Kelsey was evidently excited about and saw potential in, but ultimately, it was something they couldn’t figure into Riley’s story for the past two movies. However, that doesn’t mean it cannot be returned if Pixar green lights Inside Out 3. The fact that Kelsey was open about wanting to use it in the future is a good sign that this idea still has a life and proves that the creative ideas that are made in Pixar always have a future, even if the timing comes later.

Why Inside Out 3 Should Use It

Pixar should use this idea because there are so many brilliant ways it could be utilized not only with the emotions but also via Riley’s life. Pixar opted to make her older in the sequel. Therefore, there’s an expectation that she will continue to grow in Inside Out 3, too. That’s when this land would likely be best used as an older teenager when a lot of people naturally fall into procrastination. Whether it’s about doing homework, wanting to get a job, or day-to-day life, this is something that the majority of people have experienced, and many people who will be watching the film might be experiencing at that time.

Pixar did a great job of making Riley more relatable to people of her age in the sequel, and that’s why the character of Anxiety and the storyline she brought to the movie was so powerful. While Procrastination Land wouldn’t be a specific character, there’s no reason why it couldn’t have the same impact on people. Whether it’s adults remembering their past or how they’ve been dealing with this via their children or younger viewers who are in that world at the moment. Seeing this area could be powerful, but it also has the opportunity to provide a lot of comedy. Taking Riley to completely different places could lead to Procrastination Land changing daily as her mind wanders to unique spots, which could consistently thrust her emotions into new challenges.

How Could The Emotions React

Inside Out 2 emotions

Procrastination Land is a great idea because of how each individual emotion could react to it. It’s not a place Pixar would have to rush through, as they would spend plenty of time allowing the emotions to feel it. Kelsey already gave an example of how Anger could respond, and the fact that Procrastination Land could always change would lead to him becoming even more frustrated. Joy would likely want to try to pull Riley out of it to become focused on whatever was happening in her life at the time, which could create a lesson for that character in learning that sometimes it’s okay to procrastinate, while other times there’s a need for focus. Each emotion could help make that happen and come together to do so, continuing the teaching lessons that have been provided in the previous two films.

The fact that Pixar are aware this area is a brilliant one is a positive sign that this is going to end up happening in Inside Out 3. But it’s not just because Pixar’s creatives think it’s great that they should make it a reality; it’s because the idea has so much potential to move forward and add a lot of fun to Inside Out 3. The endless possibilities are a great situation because that’s the type of world Pixar excels in, especially in this franchise.
