Destiny 2 Steam Player Count is Dropping

Summary

  • Destiny 2 Steam player count hits an all-time low of 24,826.5 players on average in December 2024.
  • The game’s peak player count of 39,764 players is also the lowest all-time peak.
  • Destiny 2’s recent bugs and issues during the Dawning event may be reasons for the game’s declining player count.

The Destiny 2 player count on Steam dropped to an all-time low in the last 30 days, which raises some questions about the game’s direction going into 2025. The steep decline in Destiny 2 players can be traced back to days after the launch of The Final Shape in June, as the decade-long Light and Darkness saga finally came to a close.

The launch of the Destiny 2: The Final Shape expansion saw Guardians from around the world team up to finish off the Witness and end the story that began with the original Destiny game in 2014. Well over 310,000 players on Steam played Destiny 2: The Final Shape during its peak in June 2024, but the surging player count was not sustained in the months that followed, despite the subsequent release of Episode Revenant in October.

Thus far, December 2024 appears to be the lowest month of player engagement in Destiny 2’s five-year history on Steam, with just 24,826.5 average players on the platform, according to SteamCharts. Destiny 2 lost roughly 17% of its average player count from November 2024, which had an average of 30,113.5 players. In addition, Destiny 2 experienced its lowest-ever peak player count on Steam with 39,764 players, an even lower total than September 2024’s previous all-time low of 41,373 peak Steam players. It’s worth noting that the average and peak player counts on SteamCharts are not finalized for December, as there’s still more than a week left in the month. Although there’s a chance for the player count to grow, many signs point towards the decline continuing through the end of 2024, including backlash towards Destiny 2 Episode Revenant’s non-craftable seasonal weapons.

Destiny 2 Steam Player Count Drops to All-Time Low in December 2024

  • Destiny 2 reaches an all-time low average player count of just 24,826.5 on Steam in December 2024.
  • The game also reached its lowest peak player count on Steam with 39,764 players.

The Steam player count decline in Destiny 2 may be attributed to multiple controversies that affected the game during the course of Episode Revenant, including major technical issues that players experienced in Destiny 2’s Dawning 2024 event. These issues include glitched cookies, gun focusing not working as intended, and the Dawning event card being free momentarily before Bungie released a quick fix to make it paid again. Many fans also voiced their concerns and frustrations about bugs affecting Crucible, Episode Revenant’s tonics, and other aspects of the game that are vital to the overall gameplay experience in Destiny 2, which could all be factors leading to some players opting not to return to the game this month.

2024 was also full of critically acclaimed games that Destiny 2 players may be wanting to catch up on during the lack of new in-game content this holiday season. However, it’s likely that the Steam player count may grow again once Bungie releases Destiny 2 Episode Heresy and other major content updates in 2025.
