Dead Space 4 Pitch Reportedly Rejected by EA

Summary

  • EA rejected Dead Space 4 pitch, citing poor sales and risk-averse climate in the gaming industry.
  • The series creator expressed interest in a new Dead Space but faced immediate rejection from EA.
  • The Callisto Protocol, inspired by Dead Space, failed, leaving hopes for Dead Space 4 uncertain.

Sadly, EA seems to have given up on Dead Space. Earlier this year, EA denied that a remake of Dead Space 2 was ever in the works following “poor sales” of the first game’s remake.

Now, the series creator, Glen Schofield, has revealed that he pitched Dead Space 4 to the company earlier this year, only for them to shoot him down instantly.

Dead Space 4 Not Happening, Says Glen Schofield

Glen Schofield clearly has a strong affinity for Dead Space, recently revealing that “It would be cool to do a new one.” He though it would be so cool, that he actually pitched a fourth game to EA earlier this year, only for the company to shoot him down.

Speaking on the Dan Allen Gaming Podcast, Schofield said, “We tried, actually, we tried. Dead Space 4. We’re talking this year.”

We tried, actually, we tried. Dead Space 4. We’re talking this year.

Discussions didn’t get too far, however, as it was revealed that EA wasn’t willing to entertain the idea. “We didn’t go too deep; they just said, ‘We’re not interested right now. We appreciate it, and we know who to talk to.’ We respect their opinions; they know their numbers and what they have to ship,” Schofield said.

Schofield’s colleague, Christopher Stone, who appeared on the podcast alongside the former Striking Distance Studios CEO, blamed the difficulties facing the gaming industry for EA’s decision. “The industry is in a weird place right now. People are really hesitant to take risks right now. Who knows, maybe one day. I think we’d all love to do it,” Stone said. With EA one of the hundreds of companies laying off staff over the past two years, their risk-adverseness comes as no surprise.

Schofield’s most recent title, the heavily Dead Space-inspired The Callisto Protocol, was largely considered a failure. It reviewed poorly, scoring a 2.5/5 from us at TheGamer and having an average score of 67 on OpenCritic, launched with some major stuttering issues leading to negative sentiment from the audience, and failed to recoup its $162 million development costs. Here’s hoping EA eventually gives Schofield a shot at redemption with Dead Space 4.
