If you’re an AMD GPU fan, then the holidays have come early. The GPU maker’s brand new AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT flagship graphics card has been outed in a flurry of new leaks over the weekend, ditching the earlier rumored Radeon RX 8800 XT branding entirely as it plans a brand new Radeon 9000 series lineup for gamers.
While Nvidia has dominated with the best graphics cards in recent years, AMD is looking to fight back with its latest RDNA 4 GPUs. Recent RX 8000 XT rumors suggested that it might even match the ray tracing performance of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080, despite earlier suggestions that AMD was abandoning high-end Radeon GPUs entirely.
While AMD hasn’t made an official announcement just yet, we’ve already got a new name for this top-spec GPU, if leaks are to be believed. This particular information was leaked in a somewhat obtuse post by Apoleon, a Chiphell forum editor and reviewer, and shared since in a post by Videocardz, suggesting that the new AMD Radeon card will receive the 9070 XT moniker.
A further post on X (previously Twitter) by All_The_Watts, a leaker who we’ve seen provide earlier RDNA 4 rumors, added further credibility to the rumor with a series of tweets listing the entire range of new Radeon card names, with the Radeon RX 9070 XT at the top of the list.
Thanks to AMD, we even know what the card might look like. A since-locked Reddit post shared an AMD social media advertisement that, seemingly, showed off a render from an unannounced Radeon graphics card.
In a further X post by renowned AMD leaker Hoang Anh Phu, the leaker confirmed that the render was, in fact, the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT.
While a new name and a leaked render don’t tell us much, there have been plenty of rumors to consider so far. Most importantly, despite that recent speculation pointing to performance matching the RTX 4080, leaked specs for this new card seemingly put it close to the existing Radeon RX 7800 XT, despite improvements to ray tracing in the new RDNA 4 architecture.
We may not have too long to wait until we find out for certain, however. AMD has already confirmed that the RDNA 4 launch date is set for early 2025, with rumors suggesting it could happen in just two weeks time, taking place at the CES 2025 trade show in January. That would mean both AMD and Nvidia announcing next-gen graphics cards at the same time, with RTX 5000 series cards expected to be announced at CES, too.
