Silent Hill 2 remake developer Bloober Team has revealed a change of plans for one of its upcoming horror games. Project R, a title based on IP from The Walking Dead owners Skybound Entertainment, was announced last year, but in a new statement, Bloober says it will now be publishing the game as well as developing it.
When you talk about high stakes projects that could seriously hit your reputation, Bloober Team took on one of the riskiest with its remake of Silent Hill 2. Sure, being based on a beloved horror game meant that it was always going to attract attention and sell copies. But with Bloober choosing to sprinkle in some of its own innovations rather than stick to a fully faithful remake, there was always a danger that it would ruin a game that many believe is perfect to begin with. However, it totally nailed it, striking a great balance between recreating the iconic locations and moments in the original, adding modern gameplay touches, and generally putting its own stamp on Silent Hill 2.
It’s now moving onto its next big game, a new IP called Cronos: The New Dawn, but it’s also got some other projects in the background. One of them is Project R, a horror game based on a currently unconfirmed IP owned by Skybound Entertainment. Skybound is the media company that owns properties like The Walking Dead and Invincible and has published games such as the console version of The Long Dark and the final episodes of Telltale’s The Walking Dead series. Initially, Bloober was going to be responsible for just developing Project R, but in a new statement today, the Polish studio confirms it will also now self-publish the game through its Broken Mirror Games arm.
Bloober Team’s president, Piotr Babieno, also says that Project R will be “a completely new type of game, different from those that Bloober Team is known for, although of course it will be a horror game.”
That’s a pretty exciting prospect, and to me The Walking Dead feels like the most likely Skybound IP to draw from for a horror game and one that I can see Bloober tackling in a really haunting way. I might be wide of the mark there, but we should find out exactly what Project R entails at some point in 2025 as Bloober says in the statement that “marketing activities related to this title will begin next year.”
