On February 14, which marks exactly one year since the successful launch of Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered, developer Aspyr will launch Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered. Packaging together Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, Tomb Raider: Chronicles, and Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness, the second trilogy sets a much darker tone and continues Lara Croft’s evolution as a video game icon.
Game Rant recently caught up with Aspyr’s brand manager, Matthew Ray, to talk about the second trilogy and how important it is to Lara Croft’s legacy. He was quick to stress the importance of keeping the magic of the original games intact and how fan feedback has helped shape Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered‘s development journey. This interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.
Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered Was Planned From the Start
Q: Can you talk a little bit about the plan to remaster Tomb Raider 4-6? Was the idea conceived at the same time as the Tomb Raider 1-3 remasters?
A: From the start, we always envisioned giving fans the complete classic Tomb Raider experience, encompassing all six of the original Core Design games. However, the overwhelmingly positive response to Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered truly solidified our commitment to this vision. It was a powerful reminder of how much these games really mean to this passionate community, and it motivated us to bring that same level of care and passion to Lara Croft’s darkest adventures.
Q: These 3 entries feature iconic locations like the Great Pyramid and the streets of Paris. How did you balance enhancing these locations visually while trying to maintain their original atmosphere?
A: Here at Aspyr we believe in additions, not revisions. It’s all about respecting the original art direction while taking advantage of modern technology to improve the experience. Every visual enhancement—whether it’s improved textures, refined lighting, or updated character models—is designed to amplify the immersive atmosphere that Core Design originally envisioned.
Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered Will Include an Option for Modern Controls
Q: Will there be an option for a modern control scheme, similar to the original trilogy remasters? If so, could you talk a little bit about the process of updating classic games with modern elements like these?
A: We have included a modern control scheme for Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered, much like we did with the original trilogy. Adding modern control schemes to any classic game requires a delicate balance. We obviously want to make the experience smoother for new players who are used to contemporary gameplay standards while staying true to the originals for longtime fans. This process involves revisiting the original mechanics and ensuring any changes integrate seamlessly into the existing framework without undermining that classic Tomb Raider feel. The end result –we hope –is a control scheme that feels intuitive but still respects the legacy of the originals.
Q: Given the technological leaps since their original release, were there any particular challenges revisiting these iconic titles?
A: One of the biggest challenges was ensuring that the remastered visuals retained the charm of the originals. These games were developed during a time when hardware and design limitations influenced every aspect of their creation, so modernizing them required thoughtful updates to textures and gameplay mechanics. We had to re-work certain assets, like character models and environmental lighting, to meet today’s expectations without altering the original atmosphere and tone that fans hold so dear.
Q: What has been the biggest difference between remastering this trilogy compared to the first trilogy?
A: The most significant difference is the tone of these games. Tomb Raider 4-6 marks a shift into darker, more narrative-driven storytelling compared to the lighter, more adventurous tone of the first three. This required a unique approach to the remaster, emphasizing the atmospheric details of the environments and enhancing elements like lighting and shadows to immerse players in the story’s darker themes.
Tomb Raider 4-6’s Level Design Has Held Up Well
Q: During development, did you notice anything that has held up particularly well by today’s standards? If so, what was it?
A: The level design is still incredibly impressive by today’s standards. The intricate puzzles, exploration-heavy layouts, and sense of scale remain some of the best in gaming. These elements highlight just how forward-thinking the original developers were, creating experiences that continue to engage and challenge players even decades later. That’s something we worked hard to preserve in the remaster because it’s a cornerstone of what makes these games special.
How Fan Feedback Has Influenced Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered’s Development
Q: How has fan feedback from the Tomb Raider community influenced the remastering process, particularly since the original trilogy remasters launched?
A: The community’s passion and feedback have been invaluable. With Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered, fans praised the graphics toggle between classic and remastered visuals, the inclusion of modern controls, and our Photo-mode features, so we ensured all of those features returned for Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered.
Q: What do you hope players, both longtime fans and newcomers, will take away from revisiting these adventures?
A: For longtime fans, I hope these remasters feel like a love letter to the series—a chance to relive cherished memories in a way that feels fresh yet faithful. For newcomers, I hope this collection serves as an exciting introduction to Lara Croft’s darker, more introspective adventures. Ultimately, we want every player to come away with a renewed appreciation for how revolutionary these games were and how much they’ve contributed to gaming.
The Most Rewarding Aspect of Tomb Raider IV-VI’s Development
Q: What’s been the most rewarding aspect of working on this project?
A: The most rewarding part has definitely been the opportunity to bring these classic games to life for a whole new generation while honoring the memories of longtime fans. It’s a unique privilege to take something so beloved and update it in a way that respects its legacy. Hearing from fans who’ve shared their excitement, whether it’s revisiting old favorites or discovering these games for the first time, has been incredibly fulfilling. It reminds us why we do what we do.
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to share with readers about this project?
A: I’d just like to say how grateful we are to the fans for their unwavering support. Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered is a celebration of Lara Croft’s legacy and the community that has championed her adventures for decades. We hope this remaster brings you the same sense of discovery and adventure you felt the first time—or something entirely new if you’re diving in fresh. It’s an exciting time to be a Tomb Raider fan, and we’re thrilled to have you along for the ride!
