Summary
- Fans are predicting the capacity in which Geralt will return for The Witcher 4.
- He’s been touted as the Gwent final boss, and now as a potential narrator.
- At the very least, we know Geralt is alive and well during the events of The Witcher 4.
The recent reveal of The Witcher 4 at this year’s Game Awards surprised many, as CD Projekt only recently announced the game had gone into full production. While most of us expected a trailer to be at least a year away, we unexpectedly received a full cinematic trailer featuring our new protagonist, Ciri.
Since then, the never-ending grind of the Internet has sparked controversy where there is none. However, the rational and functional among us are excited about The Witcher 4. As Ciri is now the player character, many fans wondered what would become of her adopted father, Geralt.
We’re operating under the assumption that the canon ending of The Witcher 3 is one where Geralt has a silver sword crafted for Ciri, finally “approving” of her choice to become a witcher. The other endings don’t make as much sense, and one set of endings leaves the fate of both Ciri and Geralt up in the air. According to CD Projekt, Geralt is expected to live a long time after the events of The Witcher 3, so we can assume he’ll probably be around in some capacity in The Witcher 4.
The Return of Geralt
Given that we already know that Gwent will be alive and well in The Witcher 4, some fans predict that Geralt will be the final boss of the mini-game. The veteran warrior proved in The Witcher 3 that not only is he the best monster slayer on the continent, but also a master at the card table.
Although that would certainly be a cool cameo, others want Geralt to have a more involved role in the story. A recent thread on Reddit by donbosco2017 suggests that Geralt could be the game’s narrator, a role similar to the one Dandelion played for him.
The top comment on the thread by Early_Bookkeeper5394 counters this, saying “I would rather have Dandelion to be honest, he’s the poet GOAT. I don’t think Geralt and Yen fit this job.” Others disagree, saying Geralt has a surprising poetic way with words.
Another idea proposed by Mrtom987 is that multiple beloved characters could narrate, including Geralt, Yennefer, Triss, Zoltan and Regis. As the commenter concedes in their message, this idea may be “too much.”
It’ll be interesting to see if The Witcher 4 utilises a narrator. It made sense for Dandelion to chronicle Geralt’s adventures because of their relationship, but Ciri is even more of a tragic lone wolf figure than Geralt at times, perhaps making a narrator inappropriate to the tone of her story.
The Witcher IV is a single-player, open-world RPG from CD PROJEKT RED. At the start of a new saga, players take on the role of Ciri, a professional monster slayer, and embark on a journey through a brutal dark-fantasy world. Powered by Unreal Engine 5, it aims to be the most immersive and ambitious open-world Witcher game to date.
