The Temple of Trials is a hidden dungeon that can only be unlocked through Xenlons wish-granting mechanic. When you reach Cloudsgate Citadel, the main goal is to fight and defeat Xenlon. Each time you win, Xenlon will grant one wish from a set list. To make things harder, each time you fight Xenlon, you must defeat them in fewer turns than the previous fight. In this guide, we’ll explain how to reach Xenlon, and how to unlock the Temple of Trials in Dragon Quest 3 Remake.

How to Reach Xenlon in Dragon Quest 3 Remake

DQ3-Dragon-Queen-Ascend

After defeating Zoma and rolling the credits, DQIII Remake will technically start you back before the fight with Zoma. However, there is a key difference this time around: if you return to the Castle of the Dragon Queen, you’ll be able to ascend to ??? (the region is called Heaven in the DQ community).

How to Reach Cloudsgate Citadel in Dragon Quest 3 Remake:

??? is the path to Cloudsgate Citadel. It is made up of several dungeons you’ve previously visited. To begin the journey, head to the Castle of the Dragon Queen and head to the rounded chamber in the northern part of the structure. The faerie girl will now have a quest marker over her head. Speak to the girl, then walk into the large beam of light in the center of the room to ascend.

DQ3-???-Enter-Dungeon

The first section of ??? is a large green field, with a single Secret Spot and what appears to be a cave entrance. The Secret Spot houses a Metal Slime Friendly Monster (Alloy for us). Enter the cave to begin the trip through previous dungeons.

??? features the following dungeon levels:

  • Maw of the Necrogond B1
  • Maw of the Necrogond B2
  • Orochi’s Lair B3
  • Pyramid B4
  • Underground Lake B5
  • Maw of the Necrogond B6
  • Manoza Jail Cells
DQ3-Terror-Troll

At the end of the dungeon, you will arrive in an arena where you’ll fight the Terror Troll, which is a more powerful version of the Boss Troll from Manoza Castle. After defeating the troll, you will be ushered into Cloudsgate Citadel, which will now be available as a Zoom/Chimera Wing fast-travel location.

Make sure to explore all of Cloudsgate Citadel. Behind the King, you’ll find the Heavenly Helm for Warriors. In the northeast chamber, you’ll find the Bard, who offers three riddles, which is the method for acquiring the second Sage’s Stone in Dragon Quest 3 Remake. This is just the first of many useful items you’ll find here.

How to Reach Xenlon:

DQ3-Cloudsgate-Citadel-Enter

Once you enter Cloudsgate Citadel, you are very close to Xenlon. In the center of the main chamber, you’ll find a red carpet leading south from the King’s throne. At the end of the red carpet, you’ll find a stair set leading down to a lower level. Take this set to exit the main chamber. In the next chamber, you’ll find an old man offering a drink if you tell him you’re off to see Xenlon. It does not appear that this drink has any positive or negative effects.

Take the door in the southwest corner of the room to exit. This will lead to Citadel Tower. The tower has several floors of pretty difficult enemies, so you’ll want to be properly leveled. Realistically, the first time you fight Xenlon, you’ll want to be at least level 50. This is actually low, and it will be difficult, but it is possible. The first time we defeated Xenlon, we were at level 58.

Xenlon is found at the top of the tower, and you’ll know you’re in the right spot when you reach a long stairway. Take the time to use any consumables and add any items you might want to use into the party’s personal inventories. Then, let the fun begin.

How to Unlock the Temple of Trials in Dragon Quest 3 Remake

DQ3-Xenlon-Wish-Blank-Spot

To be granted the first wish from Xenlon, you must win in 35 turns or less. Upon defeating Xenlon, they will stand by their word and present you with a list of what appears to be five possible wishes. However, if you look at the bottom of the list, there will be a blank space between the last wish and the end of the text box. If you click down, you’ll notice you can actually highlight the blank space. Choose this as your wish to unlock the Temple of Trials.

Xenlon will wonder aloud how you even knew of this option, but will grant the wish nonetheless. Then, they will explain how to find the entrance, which they describe as a “tear in the fabric of reality.”

How to Enter the Temple of Trials in Dragon Quest 3 Remake:

Xenlon will explain that to enter the Temple of Trials, you must mount Ramia the Everbird on Aliahan island, then fly north. This is actually the best way to describe the process.

DQ3-Temple-Of-Trials

As you fly out over the ocean, you’ll suddenly see a bright light in the sky. It is hovering in place and growing larger as you approach it. If you fly right up to it, you will see an ‘Enter’ prompt. Interact with the prompt, and you will be transported to the Temple of Trials.

The Temple of Trials is a large dungeon that is made up of five different sections, like the points of a star. At each point, you’ll find a trial. Each trial has specific rules and rewards. Once you complete all five trials, you’ll unlock the sixth and final trial, which is a fight with the Grand Dragon.
